Its gonna take me a while to catch up with my thread, so I'll run a separate one while I'm playing with this lump......

Well Patrick thought he had trouble with his screws...... you should see these.....

The bodging bastard who worked on this engine before me, replaced all the side cover screws with these dome headed allen screws that are made of cheese...... every one apart from 2 had to be chiseled loose...... took me all fucking morning just to get the covers off.... :pissed:

Repairs been made to this one....

Image

looks ok.....

Now to me this piston looks brand new, doesn't quite look it in the pics but its in good nick....

Image

Doesn't look like its done much since it was put together...

Image

But..... look closely, you can just see it....... gearbox fucked...... again....

Struggling to get the flywheel off at the moment, never had one stuck this tight before, got my puller on
wound right up, tight as fuck...... I'll leave it overnight....

I was having a gander at Danny`s shagged gears on the weekend Geoff, i said to him ask you if there was a fix for the problem? what does the guru do?
Or is it just a case of putting new ones in there or had Yamaha come up with a stronger gear?

Mezo.

I think!!.... he uses 5th gear from the 4TB engine & he also sources the other gears from other yamaha models..... will find out more when he gets back from Morrocco..... if he'll tell me.....

More bad news with this engine, will post it up in a bit......

Wish it was a dead mouse.......

Well I got another quarter turn on my puller this morning.... coupla sharp taps with me lead shot mallet & off the flywheel flew.....

Haven't got the cases split yet.... but... I could do with a Patrick.....

Image

This bike has got some history, obviously not all of it legal....... this engine number is from an XT550 from
1984.... I've checked with my dealer.... you can see its not a real Yamaha number.... I got the registration doc
from DVLA last week & this number is on the logbook too....some jiggery pokery going on there then.. :patch:

Image

Image

Casing cracked, looks like the chain snapped or summat...

Image

Small end not too clever..... doesn't it look like someone has been rubbing in there with emery cloth

Image

Image

A very bad job at trying to repair the threads here........ :foot_tap:

hmmmm

Very true & I can't really complain I only paid 280 quid for the whole bike & all the extra bits that came with it...

Got the engine split this arvo (getting the oz slang now smile: ).... fifth gear..

Image

Image

also need an output shaft 'cos the sprocket splines are fucked.....

now I know these gears look bad but, I bet this bike would have done thousands more miles without any
problems......

Yamaha prices... Output shaft £66.73
Fifth gear pinion £41.79
Fifth gear wheel £47.10
Con rod £68.62
Big end bearing £47.10 :yikes:

All those prices are plus 20% v.a.t.

20% VAT :bigyikes:

Cheeky bastards when did they slog you lot with that then? Kiwi is running at 12.5% (warming them up to 15%) Aussie is a low 10% but watch em creep that to 12.5% very soon, they all follow the lead of the motherland & if they get away with it there then they try it on down here. :rtfi:

We're already at 15%. What pisses me off even more is that the odds and sods of sales taxes and import charges that GST was going to replace, are also creeping back into the economy. Just like our lifetime licences that have to be renewed every 10 years.
