Is there a plastic tank which will fit the 55W out of the box, or fairly easy? There are times when a smaller tank would come in handy for me, as the distances where I ride isn't long enough to warrant 30l of fuel.

Is the tank the problem?To big?If not just put less fuel.....
If its the shape......you will need an acerbis tank and a 43F seat.No side covers.And for that tank new attaching lugs.......maybe cheaper to buy an used 43F.

Sounds do-able at least, I'll keep my eyes out for a 43F tank.

As it is now, I've got two OEM tanks. Both a bit rough, but one more than the other. So I use the worst looking one for gravel/offroading, as I have a tendency to make unexpected ground inspections.. Anyway, this is my first offroader with a metal fuel tank and to be honest it feels a bit odd. And it's huge, got twice the fuel I need in there.
During my mx and enduro years I've never broken a fuel tank, a petcock once, but that's as close as it gets. So I'm not all that worried about a plastic tank breaking when I fall over.

Now look in the manuals section I think there is the 43 parts list.I think the front rubber points are the same as 34L.The smaller tank has only one bolt on the frame much further.You need to investigate.

the big tank is a bit of an issue if your trying to get your weight forward to corner,i found i lost the front less by standing and being able to load front end of bike a bit rather than sitting and front being a bit sketchy...i know its not a sort of focused enduro bike but they are still pretty cabable for the the weight as long as you keep a bit of momentum.
they will still go quite a long way on half a tank.
