4-5k rpm wall

Hello guys,

My xt 600 2kf 1989 won't rev past 4-5k rpm.
A month ago the bike wouldn't start, after some troubleshooting I found that the two separate red and brown wire coming from the stator was showing OL in the multimeter (this is my first bike, first time working on it so I don't know what all the parts are called, I'm learing along the way, bear with me please).

I bought a new aftermarket startor with all the parts needed and installed it. Finally the bike started but now it won't rev past 4-5k rpm, it hits a wall and if i push it beyond 5k rpm it dies.

Bike was runing fine before all of this, so it would'nt be related to the carbs?

google ai says its the pickup coil/pulse coil in the stator that's the main culprit. I've flipped the wires in the 3 pin connector to see if the polarity was reversed, the bike wont start and it backfires.

Any help would be appreciated

Sounds like the correct answer, if carb was bang on recently, doesn't mean it definitely isn't though, as it's been sat. Could be dirt, could be adjusted to a bike with bad electrics, and now needs resetting to your new spark.
What stator did you fit, electrex or eBay?
Are all the colours the same?
Do you have the specs to hand for your model? I'd just work through that first. Stator, coil and reg.
Check connections.
Electrex do correct coils, and reg/recs can be found at different prices. I bought two cheap ones, but have another spare.
Maybe the cable was damaged when fitting the cover? Disconnect them and check to earth/casing.

If you are achieving 4 to 5K revs then thats not bad and I would be surprised if its linked to timing or ignition however you really need to check the bike under load.

I would suspect the second carb and if the bike has been stood that dreaded ethanol additive. But do a load test with the bike and establish what changes. Does the bike increase speed if you shut a little off, does it backfire on overrun down hill, plug colour cutting it at problem range.

Did you measure the pickup coil resistances? and what is your charging volts at tick over and at 4K?

it hits a wall under 3k rpms now. if i'm aggressive on the throttle it hits the wall earlier

What have you checked so far?

I apologize for late reply. It has been resolved, the problem was the aftermarket source coil, it was too weak.

When I crack the throttle, the CDI demands maximum voltage, but the weak coil instantly collapses under the load.

I swapped it for the original, and that got it running through the whole rev range again.

Thanks for the suggestions anyway!

How about listing the link to the aftermarket coil here. Useful info.
Glad it's sorted
