1VJ Clutch Basket

Post by XT-Simon »

Hello,
I have taken both sides overs of my 1VJ on the hunt for a knock that appears louder after a few minutes warming up, that knock is the subject of a future question. The question for the post is about the clutch basket looking like it is wobbling too much. So, should the basket wobble? Is there any stated tolerance? The plain bearing is a good fit on the input shaft, the wobble is between the oil pump/gear assembly and the large basket drive gear/basket.
Thanks in advance, Simon

Not sure if I understand your issue correctly, however if you push on the basket alternately at the 3 and 9 o'clock position there can be a small amount of movement but not much. Maybe a millimetre.
The bush is easily swapped at an engineering shop.

Thank you, yes the movement you describe is what I am seeing. I have maybe 3mm or 4mm at the basket outer edge. There is a bronze plain bearing pushed into the inner gear. The fit to the gearbox input shaft is fine but the outer surface of the plain bearing to the basket is terrible.
This leads me onto finding part numbers, any advice for that? Is there a microfiche type of download for the 1VJ?

I also have found that I can move the input shaft radially about 0.06mm so I am going to do a full strip down and replace as much as I can.

Yeah that's going to rattle like crazy. I think even 1mm is on the high side, you should only just about feel a very slight movement.

There's no Yamaha part number, the whole assembly was supposed to be changed as far as I can tell.
But if you take it to an engineering shop, they'll tell you the type of bearing and size. From memory it's a plain bronze 25 28 40, but I wouldn't rely on my memory or knowledge of bush types. Easy to swap.
However you might find it hard to find a 40mm long one so might have to go with a 25 + 15.
