xt600 43f 1984 restoration help

Hi I'm getting to the end of this rebuild,... got a new gearbox from moritz! 2kf crank rebuilt with a 3tb rod minus the washers a tt cylinder replated and a new prox piston everything painted all new engine bearings seals gaskets with the bigger 3aj pump etc however after putting the engine in I noticed my oil breather from the oil tank had no where to go with my frankenstein combo? So I done as in the picture and put the breather nipple onto the aluminium plate I'm just wondering though if this is OK or might cause any trouble? Thanks for any help

Its not a breather hose but the oil tank overflow line. Any excess oil from the oil tank is returned to the engine via that line. As you observed correctly, early models returned the oil to the cylinder head, while in later models (from 1986 or so on) returned it to the crankcase near the crankcase breather connection.

You can connect the overflow line to the valve cover no problem, this is the most commom solution and will cool and lubricate the exhaust valve rocker that extra bit, which is a good thing.

The dry sump system relies on the fact that the return pump does deliver more oil to the tank as the primary oil pump takes away from there. So there WILL be oil in that line, and you can not leave it open as with the crankcase breather.

Ah thats good information to know and what you say expecially with it being the higher pressure 3aj pump makes sense in that the return might pressurise the oil tank enough that oil makes its way into this pipe and offers some extra colling to the exhaust cam the way i have it.. very informative and reassuring, thanks very much!
