Could a faulty diode prevent the bike from starting?

Post by untertaber »

Hello its me again, finnaly gotten some time to look at things. Now I pulled apart the tape above the battery too check out the diode.. I broke it getting it lose but it already looked quite beaten up. The plastic around it was filthy and the connecters where completely white corroded, so il have to order a new one anyways. Its only €16 for the whole assembly anyways (3K7819800000). Could this cause my bike not to start? Because when I pull in the clutch it does have spark, but not without it. Weird.

Need more information than that - although not had that bike. Unusual to see a diode used that way? But likley to be conencted with a coil or rectification based component such as a relay. good luck

Thats by design to prevent you from electric starting the bike with gear engaged. The meachanism actuates a relais which cuts the power to the starter relais. The diode is to prevent an electric short.
You can get rid of most of the stuff, or just pull the clutch for electric start.

The CDI wants to "see" the gearbox in neutral, or if gear engaged the clutch has to be pulled, to send power to the starter relais.
And the sidestand up or gearbox in neutral to produce a spark.

See the schematic here:
