I am a newbie to the Ténéré, and am itching to take the machine for a long run, but my fairly recently restored bike, has a wee electrical gremlin that has me stumped.
When I put the indicators on, in either direction, ( most scary turning right on roundabouts!) the engine cuts out with every flash, cutting back in for every blink, like a short to the kill switch.

Engine restarts fine when flashers are turned off, but if I try to keep going or restart with indicators flashing, and with the cheap, exhaust, It sounds like an AK47 strapped to the back

So, anyone got any ideas where the short might be, or do I have to find an auto electrician?

Cheers :hide:

Well that`s a new one for me, first id just try the basics by opening all the connectors & squirting contact cleaner & blowing it out, then (important) apply dielectric grease.

Then go & check your grounds. free of rust & (noice & toight) then again some dielectric grease, to find this fault i`m guessing the fairing/tank/seat all has to come off (to do a proper job) its also good/preventative maintenance for the future.

Thanks Mezo,
Grrr I was hoping for less work!
The old klr gives me plenty things to have to fix, I was hoping the Ténéré would be a breeze!
Ah well.

Well give it to an auto spark then. :rtfi:

In your neck of the woods its good practice to go through your bike once, cleaning ALL connections & grounds, then importantly applying dielectric grease, you get to understand your bike & by removing the tank/seat & fairings you may well spot a fault or bodge by a previous owner.

Does the engine cut out when using the horn?
If so the battery is knackered.
If not the indicator relais is gone.

My guess.

The indicator relais draws 2x20W which brings down the voltage far enough for the 12V ignition to fail.
The horn should do the same thing if the battery is the problem.

You could measure your battery voltage when indicating ...
