Softening rubber intake tubes

Has anyone ever tried this?

My intake tubes are rock solid to say the least!

I use wintergreen oil mixed in rubbing alcohol to soften some old boots . Works good but you have to keep an eye on things because some will expand like you wouldn't believe . It then takes weeks or months to settle down and shrink back down. Makes them nice and soft but will get hard again over time.
