Xtz660 nut on rhs crank loose

Just helped a buddy with his xtz660 with a knocking sound.
When confronted, he said its been like that for about a year.
Heres the worn key:
I think we got there just in time. He has actually got a spare parts engine where they key let go because of the loose nut, destroying most of the engine.
I have adviced him to keep the revs up, and or fit a 14t front sprocket.
