Engine knock...

Hey lads...

My xt600e has covered just over 155.000km. It was rebuild at 125.000km with new piston and camchain.

It has startet to knock for the alst couple of thousand km. I was sure it was pistonslap, as the bike started using a bit of oil at 140.000km. I also suspencted the crank, conrod ect... :patch:

I decided to check the easy things first, and low and behold, the nut behind the clutch was loose

Before (the erratic idle is fixed aswell)

Loose nut:

After:

I removed the clutch and the nut, cleaned with brakecleaner, used threadlocker, and gave it a good wack with the airgun.

So thx to Mezo and others for letting us know about this problem. A buddy of mine had the nut come loose at around 20.000km, he used 16/42 gearing, and rode at way too low rpms, basically hammering the nut loose with all the vibrations and knocking.

Cant wait to ride the bike again... :funkynanna:

I had a nut come loose on a stator's rotor/flywheel. Sounded terrible, I thought the crank was coming apart. I let out the same sigh of relief when I found it. Key was all chewed up and keyway needed a bit of cleanup as well as the taper and flywheel. I used valve lapping compound to lap the flywheel back to the crank taper. Cleaned up perfectly and works perfectly today. :star:

I remember several years back coming up behind a truck on my 900SS and getting ready to overtake. Over the wind and the sound of the Termignonis I suddenly noticed this horrendous clattering noise. I decided I'd get past the truck then pull over and see where it was coming from. As I overtook the truck it got louder and I was really panicking, half expecting the engine to explode - got past the truck and it suddenly got quieter, to the point where I couldn't hear it.

I pulled over up the road, and moments later the truck came past, making a horrendous clattering noise...

I seem to remember kissing the bike. :ride:
