The spring of 2014 I desided to get on of the bikes I at as a teenager, a 3AJ Yamaha XT600Z Tenere whit 71k kms on the clock. The adds pic:

Its a 1990 modell, German import that had 25kw papers but is full power from what I know. The 3AJ was only sold here in Finland in 1988 in quit low numbers.
So I gave it a good wash and looked wath had to be done as all the dirt and dust came off it.

A lot needed to do something about. Tires where 10 years old and cracked
Front faring miss angled


Spokes more or less corroded


Fenders color faded


Mirrors corroded

I realised only later the screen is not a stock smoke version

Odd thing betwen the headlights

And low beam headlights mirror is faded

The biggest thing was that as cold the engine did smell like a 2 stroker if you did rew it a bit.....
I had hoped it would be work piston rings, but as I opened the head, the top of piston was wet of oil, and piston rings like new.
The reason, someone of the former owners had owerheated the engine to a point where the valve guards has let go from the top
Properly some one later had change the piston rings trying to make it smoke less oil...

I got depressed and it did stand in the garage for months until I did find someone that offered to repair the head by time affordable. He still has the head in his shop.
Lately I have found intress to do stuff to it again. this is the progress a week ago

Does not show so mutch, but:
- all brakes are stripped, both calippers as M/C:s
- headlight is fixed, there are now FZR600 -89 headlights for the US market so I get low and high beam in both lights, not low in other and high in other as the German spec was like.
- front subframe adjusted so the top faring sits nice whit the tank. I just wounder if I should try to find a new one, a undamaged one, as current has seen its best days.

I did late last week get the saddle whit its new cover!

I leaning towards getting the wheels and spokes brushed and painted black, as a budget option.
The engine, well it needs a new cam chain, tensioner was one click from full out
The brakes need new seals and rear calipper even a new piston.
I have new tires (Bridgestone TW 301/302).
The fork will get new oil at least.
More for the engine I now in between should I just put it together when I get the fixed head (whit a new cam chain) or should I pull it totally apart, as its basically half done alredy.
Ah forgot the carburattors, that seem to need some love to. Kedo had a rebuild kit for it still this spring but only for the later XT600E anymore.

Well this so far, keep you updated when I get something done.

I don't know if you have to do a periodic technical control on the bike in Finland. I know that having a non European lights would be a showstopper in Poland. The US lights have a different light pattern. The lights allowed in the most european countries should have an "E" sign stamped on it, like in the example below


I hope for you that a control guy does not look too close on the lights...

Your bikes small problems are very common (like my old 3AJ) headlights glued in place & fairing screw holes worn & broken.

If i was there now i would pull out the whole swingarm out & check all the bearings & bushes, i can almost guarantee you they will need replacing & greasing.

Yes, I know, lots of work ahed. But isn´t it part of the fun?

We don´t have yearly technical inspection on bikes here in Finland (like on cars), bikes only if imported they have to be shown for registration, and on older bikes DOT lights are actually OK. Its a import bike, even from Germany . The US lights are diffrent, the low beam light pattern is flat, not un-symetrical. I actually been reading that many new japanese bikes comes whit a flat low beam patter, only one headlight needed then for all countrys. There I also see a versalyty of the flat low beam, if I hapen to do a trip to a country whit left side traffic, like UK.

The reason the front faring was not in Place is the bike seem to have had a fall and headlight/faring subframe bent. The fastners on the tank actually look ok as the treads.

For the swing, actually been thinking the same....

Proberly a reason why manufactures did stop put greese nippels in the linkage.

I have a friend that owns a 1990 XT600E, and fortynally for him (I think) former owner had rebuilt the linkage and installed grease nippels on his that was whitout.

For me its a big + the linkage has grease nippels, and I use them if they are there.

I have heard of this also (600E modification back to nipples) not sure why Yamaha stopped using grease nipples?
