Hi all.

I am gonna try and learn something from all you clever mechanics out there.
You see the problem is I do not know much about carbs and 4 stroke bikes in general.
I am going to post some pics and try and get all the info I can get.
I don't know where the pipes on the carb go and I am not too sure what they do.
Any help would be appreciated.

Scenario
Bike used to start like a dream. standing for 2 weeks choke , Push button fired up , Idled , wonderful.
Sent the carbs in to be cleaned......
Now bike battles to start. Eventually starts and dies about 5 times. Then Idles fine for as long as you like. Rides perfectly fine for about +-45 mins.
Then is backfires a few times and dies. Pull over and wait a bit and it starts first time and off I go again. But for a shorter time...ETC ETC ETC......

I would like to know the possible causes and where all the pipes go and what they for so I can learn a bit.
I have been told to look for a breather hole in the petrol cap and make sure that is open. Will be looking for one tonight any help would be greatly appreciated
as you are never too old to learn.

Does anyone know where tha altitude compensator pipes go. And how to bypass it?

The altitude compensator has been mentioned before on this forum, try the "search" function, top right of the screen.

Mez has a 3AJ manual to down load HERE if you don't already have it.
The manual shows an exploded pic of the standard carb with 2 hoses that are breathers & the over flow hose for the float bowl, all hang down to air, not connected to anything.
Looking at your pics the extra brass fittings that don't appear on the standard carb look like they are tapped into areas that are normally sealed.
So I think to convert to a standard setup I think you could just seal the altitude compensator specific fittings on the carb & inlet manifold. Also check your jet sizes to make sure they are in the same ball park as standard.

Does the compensator come apart?
It might be possible to work out what is happening, how it leans the mixture as you get higher & where the hoses should be fitted.

Do you suspect the compensator to be the cause of your problems for some reason, just guessing or just want rid?
Your problem could be something else.

Is this '3AJ' in fact an import from Switzerland known as a 3DS ? on the RH casing the engine number stamped on there should read 3AJ or 3DS amongst the letters/numbers & the same goes for the stamping on the frame by the headstock.

Confirm this so we know what were dealing with.

Defiantly 3AJ on the registration papers as well.
Checked Engine and Frame Numbers.

Ive just done a search on Google & it came back to this site, Mats had a German 3AJ with the altitude compensator read this, yet ive also read many times it only came on the Swiss models?

If it was the Swiss model it may be restricted (on purpose) have a read (all of it) on this HUBB thread, here.

Hope you understand why i said "post it on the forum" its one of them oddball subjects that's not 100% clear yet.
