Ive been taking the 1VJ off road quite abit and its noticable that the suspension isnt great but not thst im expecting it to be. Now the bike is 27 years old and not sure if any of the suspension has been serviced r3cently or ever. Does the rear spring degrade and would I notice a difference changing it.

Really I wanted to know what upgrades people use on these bikes what aftermarket shocks are compatible.

Stock rear DRZ400 springs are a little softer(IIRC 5.6g/mm), so you can get a stiffer version of that models, RMZ450 and CR450R springs also are compatible ,just need to go by compression rate when ordering.

I think the side reservoir makes it a problem with hitting stuff & general clearance, none of the aftermarket shocks have the side reservoir they use a remote one on a pipe.

So no it wont fit.

Ok just another quick question, the valves ontop of the forks are these simply for releasing air or are they supposed to be under a certain pressure. Had a search on google and couldnt get a definitive answer

Its 5.7 psi, i just put 5 in there when i did mine, push bike pump jobbie.

EDIT: Could be a bit more?? i just searched (top right of screen) "psi forks" & a few lads are putting in more than that, i guess it depends how you like the feel?

Just thought I would update this thread. I removed the rear shock and stripped it considering the bike is 27 years old it was in remarkable condition certainly not seen much offroad use. However I removed the spring and compared it to an old KTM 450 WP spring I had in the garage and they were a very good match so good in fact that I fitted the WP spring which I was pleased about. I thought I would update though as I would have never thought it would have fitted seems like a nice little upgrade.
