Rim cracks

Post by Uncle Dave »

Hi all, I just bought an XTZ750 and have a small crack in the front rim where the original weld was. Now, should I not worry too much or should I panic and avoid riding it until I get a new rim etc...

Here's a pic.

I wouldn't be overly concerned Dave, its not if you pulling wheelies or doing jumps on it, are you? :sherlock:

No jump etc, I just want to ride it and being on shift all this coming week gives me all day to ride....

The crack goes right through and it looks like it was caused by an impact as the rim has a very slight buckle at this spot..

Anyway, what's the worst that can happen? :fall:

Thanks mate.

They do tend to go on the join, my old 3AJ had one in the same spot.

On the crossers we just welded them up, wasn't bothered what it looked like. :nordie:

The tension on the spokes, the air pressure in the tyre and the weight of the bike all tend to pull the rim inwards (pulling the crack together).
You could ride on bitumen roads for a year and not worry.
"Don't worry," he said, "things could be worse ........."
So I stopped worrying and lo and behold, things did get worse!

Thanks guys, but I don't intend on riding bitumen roads... That's why I'm a little worried.

Come on Uncle Dave, where`s that Aussie spirit? "She`ll be right mate"

But seriously like Actionman (Dave) said, the inflated tire is most of the strength anyhow, the rim just keeps the tire in place, not forgetting centrifugal forces.

Uncle Dave,
I am sure the crack will not fail catastrophically. My first job was with the Dept of Def doing nondestructive testing of cracked bits and this would have been 'put back into service' !!.
How long have you had the S10? It looks nice. Can we ask what you paid (wont tell the missus) :hot: slywink:

Hi Bernieboy, thanks for the reassurance on the crack. I will just keep an eye on it to see if it grows.

I've only had the s10 for about a week, drove to Adelaide to get it last Friday. Been looking for a couple of years but the few that come up have usually been modified and 'butchered' and I just wanted an honest original example and that's pretty much what I got.

Cost was about $5k, huge money for the age but they're getting quite rare now, just like any good older Tenere. :shades:

P.S. Does anyone know how many 750's were sold in Oz? I had an idea it was about 300???
