Tenere 1VJ Rebuilding in the Netherlands

After my introduction I will start here a thread about rebuilding my YAMAHA TENERE XT600Z 1VJ.

I got my XT600Z in october 2012, someone had it standing in the shed doing nothing with it so I said sell it to me and he did.
First thing I want to do is taking it completely apart, renew what needs to be renewed, new paint and whatever pops up.
My goal is to rebuild it "factory defaults", we will see

Question:
How can I remove the cover of the steering lock because I want to renew this lock.

That is a good question on the lock & i don`t know myself, this thread should be in the "Restoration & Rebuild" section of the forum seems you are going to do such a thorough job of it.

file/grind/sand the top off of the retaining pin/rivet, remove cover, and I think (was a while ago) punch whats left of the pin/rivet through to the inside of the headstock. Replacement covers and pins are available on the bay of E

How did you go about putting it back?

not done it yet, but with the pins I saw on EBay you just tap back into the hole left by the old pin, they have a very course self tapping action to retain them.

getting the lock itself out is another story, I can only assume you need the key, which I did not have, a combination of drills, screw drivers and picks eventually worked

Im pretty sure ive seen them locks on ebay as well? think it was posted on here as well? my memory is so shit.

yer, think its one of them age related things, will confirm tomorrow if the hole goes through to the middle of the headstock, tis dark downt shed now........and the spiders will be out

Maybe the Moderator can do this for me so we don't have a duplicate thread?

About the steering lock, I managed to get it out.
Don't "file/grind/sand the top off of the retaining pin/rivet" to remove the cover, simply use a hammer and a screwdriver to gently tap it out. The pin is like a nail.

Removing the rest is indeed an other story. You got to have the key or get it out with a drill. The only thing that blocks it is a small pin (see picture).
