Next dumbass question

Post by andylarkin »

Ok. Now I am being thick.

I pulled the gaiters down to the bottom lip as Karl mentioned from my last pic post. I found the securing band and went to clamp it all down… but the band isn't even close to closing.

What have i got wrong? The lip of the gaiter fits into the recessed groove on the fork leg doesn't it (as shown in the pic below) and then the clamp sits over the top of that? Or have I got that wrong? I'm out by about 7-10mm even though the gaiter appears to be seated correctly?

Doh!

Andy,

Firstly, great job putting them back together! Top polishing job too!

Here is a pick of the (new 18 months ago) Genuine Boot Clamps on my 34L. The screw is genuine too.
Image

The clamp gap isn't unusual. 1970's Yamahas used to close the clamp fully, but they also had pretty standard fork diameters.
This clamp is used in a few applications.

Just make sure they are located properly in the groove and the clamp is snug (not ridiculously tight, which will cut the boot off) about 1 or 2 mm up from the bottom of the boot.
Check to make sure they are still snug after a couple of weeks, then relax - everything will be fine from there.

Some points to note:
1. The holes should be at the bottom (although I think you have that right in the photo).
2. Genuine boots only have the holes around half the bottom convolute.
3. The factory position for the holes is for them to be positioned to the rear half of the fork (there will probably be some discussuon on this - most of the shit off the wheel comes from behind the leg, straight into the holes, but against this they will drain water / oil properly - and away from the seal & leg surface - to the rear).

Sensei Lambeth rebuilding your engine! I would love to know how much a full engine rebuild is costing you.

I'd just like to congratulate all the site members for the support they have given Andy during this part of HIS project.
This is what these forums are intented for and I'm grateful that the support comes when we each need it. Thank you all !

Thanks for the responses.

I do definitely have the boots on the right way and they are genuine Yam items (still got the packaging somewhere!).

The clamps I have look a bit different from those ones on your pic though Mike, which probably explains why they don't fit right. Guess I have mislaid the originals. The fork legs have been powder coated rather than polished, which will have added a teeny bit to their diameter I guess but not the amount the clamps fall short by - I guess I'll have to buy some more!

As for the engine cost, god alone knows? I took the decision a long time back that I wanted it doing properly so canvassed opinion and Dave was given a massive thumbs up, especially by those that had gone on serious expeditions. I guess I will reserve judgement til I've run it in and see how she goes.

Compared to the cost of rebuilding a CB1100R engine I hope it will be less than that - now they are costly - but this bike has turned into a money pit so I have to see it through (although I love it dearly already and I've not even ridden it yet!).

Thanks all for your support thus far!

I don't know how its applied Eric, be that one coat or two, but it is what the coaters call their silver chrome finish. It's very good in my opinion… not as bright as actual chrome and not a huge difference from polished alloy. I'm pleased with it.

Interesting comments in this post. Mike you mentioned previously some spares of suzuki forks that are also the right spares for the 34L 1VJ etc. What about part #55w-23157-00, RING, Piston, Do you know in which motorcycla can we found this part? thank in advance for your comments.
