Yes I've read that but forgot. I've been doing a lot of reading lately and some of it gets lost!

My balancer gear has a tooth missing. Is that normal?
Anyway, I've just ordered a second hand one from the bay for £20, as they are £50+ for a new one even from US.

No.
Replace it.
Locktite make a product called 'Press fit repair', read about it and use it to repair and fill any wear gaps around the crank keyway.
Tighten the crank gear nut about 10% more then the spec.
Check the crank nut every 20,000km or any time you have the clutch cover off. Insurance against failure.

Thank you Australian person.

Counter and main/pinion fifth gears are knackered.
Counter third has one damaged side, third main/pinion is fine.
Main/pinion fourth has two sides damaged, fourth counter fine.

Should I replace the corresponding gears (3 and 4) anyway, even if there's no damaged?
Is it worthwhile replacing anything else as a matter of course? (I'll be replacing the drive oil seal and washer)

Oh dear nasty business..ouch..have a good look at your oil pump while your in there and also check the oil strainer for wreckage..out if curiosity is the blanking plug still fitted ok in the right hand end of output shaft?..
I think if you think about it the oil pump is almost the heart of the motor and most of the other traumas the motors seem to suffer with are related to it..from what I've seen of ones I've had apart they all seem to follow the same trend inside.

What bits do I order for this engine?
It's a 3AJ/2KF top end and it's got 3AJ stamped on the crankcase and oil pump but 2VJ on the left case and conrod?

Is it an 88 or 90 or something else!

We established its a 3AJ engine before, so you can order 3AJ or later 3TB (from a 600E) now this is where you can read Geofffs posts on his 3AJ rebuilds (or just PM him) as he`s well up on 3AJ/3TB`s.

I'm pretty sure later gears are the same anyway just different part numbers iirc.

To be honest I've read so much over the last month it makes my head spin!

Yes the same size/shape but harder faces? Dave Lambeth rebuilds his engines with later gears i thinl? & i wondedered if geoff knows which ones he uses?

Well I asked Geoff via PM and he said use 3AJ ones!
Maybe he was having bad day or just sick of newbies bothering him with the same stupid questions.

So, I have ordered both, 3AJ and whatever the 1990 ones are.
