Can you see the oil returning to the tank (through the filler cap)?
The bike needs to be upright so as much oil as possible is around the oil pickup pipe in your sump.

The scavenge side of the pump (back to the tank) should pump more oil than the engine feed, so after a while (a couple fo mins at most) the engine should start pumping "Air" back to the tank. This is the most accurate time to check your oil level, but once you know it's working, just have the bike upright, hot & ticking over for 20-30secs when you check oil level.

My 660 has "oil in frame" & the return pipe squirts oil onto the dip stick, so my engine has to be turned off to check the level & there isn't much difference between no reading & over full (about 0.5 ltr).

Checking the oil level is the biggest ball ache of owning a Ten, but you get used to it.

I made sure none of the passage ways where block by blowing compressed air though them.

Oil level- I have bleed the the oil filter cover bleed screw and the oil comes flying out and hits the exhaust. So I guess the oil pump is working. I have checked the oil level with the engine warm and running on the side stand. Geoff has mentioned the bike should be up right when checking.

I have followed the manual a put 2.4 Litres in the engine and this does not show up on the dip stick at all.

Yes the bike should be upright and hot!

Took the Tenere for a spin down the road (to the bank) came outside & theres a bloke there admiring the bike, he said,,

"Wow is that a special edition Tenere then? ive never seen one like that"

He thought it was a new bike, i said its an 1988 i brought in a box for $800 & rebuilt it from the ground up (priceless look on his face).

So that is the "good times" Dan, when total strangers come up on the street & admire your bike, and when you park your Tenere
you will also have total strangers admiring it & asking you questions (with smiles on there faces)

Youre right there Mezo, my Xt is nothing like yours, but last week I went on a Yamaha Test ride day, and I had the Yamaha Guys taking pics of my bike and asking me questions, I was blown away, rode home with a huge grin on my face!
Dan, your bike is freakin awesome, and when you iron out the little problems you will look back and think,"what the fuck was I thinking of selling this baby", mark my words!

I fully understand where you guys are coming from. I have the same response when I take Ms Pearl for a ride. In being my RS a rare beast here in Aus. I don't think I have really conveyed how much this bike really gives me the shits and could be going back to Andy Gadgets house.

In the mean time I thought I would toughen up and soldier on. Had an early day from work today and a few hours to spare and pull the carbs off the re check the float level. I would say it is a little low. Re adjusted the a float and tried to put the bowl back on. Only to find the new rubber o ring has swelled up and is about 5mm to big for the bowl to go back on. Had to trim and super glue the o ring back together to make it fit.



While it is apart. Now is good time to re check the valve clearances to make sure the valves are not too tight. Upon turning the crank around to align the T mark for loose valves. Only to find the bike will not sit on the T mark. The rotor rolls forward and stops about one tooth on the cam chain. If this is right the timing is retarded and I have to pull the bike apart again and re due the cam chain. I had enough for today.

mate when i've had enough i stick the project in the corner, cover it up and ignore it until i get the motivation back, take a break

Thanks Dan, I do need a break from the bike for awhile. Just hard to do as the bike is there every time I walk in the garage. I have put the bike on the work stand and placed a blanket over it to try and hide it. If I see it, I have to work on it. That not a Tenere thing. It is the same with all my bikes.

Must be a male thing. Now have to figure out if i can alter the cam timing without have to the whole engine apart again. Hoping I can do this via the rocker cover.
