Grab your verniers and measure the total shaft protrusion. If they are the same then the only difference may be something small like an extra lube hole. You may have to split both engines to know for sure.

Just looking at both of those pics, it looks as through the knackered one is 2 or 3mm longer. May have implications for chain or may be of no consequence.

Tell what you find. :book:

Can't measure the protrusion cos the 3TB one is stripped down & the 3AJ one is at the guru's place...... I actually managed to speak to him last night & he also says both shafts are identical, no difference at all..... he reckons my dealer has messed up.... Next time I'm there I'll check again... :sherlock: :book:

How does the price on Boats.net compare to your local parts bandit? (link supplied a few posts back) :working:

price from Boats for the 5th gear pinion & wheel, shaft & conrod is £176.30..... about £50 cheaper than my dealer, but by the time I pay postage & any import duties, its probably not worth it ...

I'm in the same position as most of you. I can feel my 5th gear crapping out and don't want the risk of it completely failing at speed. If I split the case, can I put the new gear in myself, assuming I have all the tools of course?

Depends, Scottie.... its a big job, probably the biggest job you could undertake on your bike.... once you've stripped that far you'll more than likely be looking at a new conrod, piston, rebore, etc,etc....lots of money... :mike: have you rebuilt a bike engine before, do you have mates who have? who'll give you a hand? The satisfaction gained from doing it yourself is nice..... but.... when I was your age I'd of probably rode the shit out of it till it fell apart..... then I'd fix it...

I'm thinking ahead for preventative maintenance. I plan on taking this bike to Patagonia by 2015 and if there's anything I can do ahead of time to get the bike back to near-factory quality, I'd like to do it if it's worth it. I enjoy fixing the bike as much as I enjoy riding it. It's meditative despite all the curse words. And trust me, I ride the shit out of it.
