I have an ‘07 Tenere with this same issue. First time I heard the knocking, I took it to the shop and they tightened the crank nut to spec (80Nm) and used loctite. Maybe 6 months to a year later, the noise came back, but I decided to do it myself, sure enough the crank nut was loose again, but the tab was still over it. How the nut could loosen I don’t understand, I’m thinking there must be something on the other end of that shaft that is loosening which takes the tension off the crank nut??
After putting that back together, tightening to 90Nm and using more loctite, 3 months later the noise is back. I’m not happy. Can anybody explain what’s going on?

That’s something I should mention yeah, the key seemed to be completely fine, I couldn’t see any wear on it besides a slight mark of where it contacted, but nothing that would significantly change its width. However, there was 2-3mm of play in it. This puzzled me for a long time, and I ended up concluding that it was just the way it was designed.

This play didn’t matter once it was tightened up since the nut pushed against the key.

Should it be a snug fit?

2009 (not 2007 whoops) XT660Z, 50,000km.

The link doesn’t seem to work for me, “database error”. I read elsewhere that it’s normal for this key to have a bit of play in it, not that it’s good, but it is normal. Thoughts?

Try the link again, Grant`s site was down temporarily.

There should be zero play in the keyway as it will only get worse (wear more) needs to be a tight fit.

You can search this site (top right) using the word "counterbalace" but i also post on Grants site (The HUBB) when i find something of use for the XT guys over there.

Good man, if they Key is worn then the keyway will also be worn (wider) so a custom fit key is the way to go & like you say a bit more torque.

Not sure you should tighten it so much to be honest
