You got the timing spot on right Dan? Andy would have double checked that im sure.

Re: Just Dan's little resto on a 34L Tenere'
That would indicate too lean an idle mixture or inlet tappet too tight (holding valve slightly off seat).Just Dan wrote:The bike is back firing into the airbox at idle. Was quite loud in the start and and now it is smaller. If the bike is idling, the back fire (phutt sound) will stall the bike.
A lean mixture burns LONGER and HOTTER than a rich mixture. This means that there can still be a lick of flame left in the combustion chamber as the inlet opens during the overlap period.
Result...
Idle air screw is a prick to get to (upside down at front of carb). I think you turn it in to richen, opposite to lean off.
You could try putting the choke on slightly to richen the mixture. This might give you an idea as to what is required.
Another thought is valve timing. How accurate were you when you pressed the crank timing gear back on? Just a thought.
"Don't worry," he said, "things could be worse ........."
So I stopped worrying and lo and behold, things did get worse!

Starting from the bottom up. I can reach the idle mixture screw easy enough. I just recently screwed it in to the stop and and unscrewed it 3 turns out from the 2 turns it was.
The crank was pin punched before pulling apart and put back together lining up the pin punch marks. I will look into inlet valve gap and check the timing. Andy did the timing while I was up stairs making a coffee. If it was out by 1 tooth it would cause hard starting.
Still can not figure how you check the oil level on these things. I tried to check the level with engine running and still shows empty on the dip stick.

Ahh i was talking about the tickover screw that adjust the idle not the air fuel mixture screw, which from memory is two or two & half turns out?Just Dan wrote:Starting from the bottom up. is it the same as a 3AJ ? im not running downstairs to check its freezing outside.
You can check the timing Dan by opening the inspection covers on the head & side casing, i was wondering if it may be off by a tooth causing the problem & thats the first thing i would be checking, but seems Andy did that im confident he would have done it correct, but hey even NASA makes mistakes.
I did my oil check by having it on the stand running & in gear, Raul said go round the block & check after that but it wasnt ready for that so i mimicked riding it by having it in gear (pretending the bike was rolling down the road) try doing it this way Dan & keep the bike upright & level.

As I mentioned before, to check your oil have the bike running till it's hot. The bike needs to be upright as possible, check oil with the engine running Dan.
I agree with Dave, sounds like your bike is running lean.

Hey Dan, learn from my mistake, make sure you are checking the oil level right. I don't know about your bike , but the 550 you need to put in 2.2 litres of oil from a rebuild. I pulled the screw from the oil cover and the oil was spewing out great, and when it was warm the oil level was good. The 550 is basically the same motor apart from you have an oil tank and the 550 has oil in the frame, there is a one way valve that keeps the oil from dropping into the sump, so as long as you check your oil when the engine is hot and just been switched off you should be good!

Forgot to mention. When you kick the bike over. It starts and runs for about 5 secs and stalls. Re kick the bike and the bike starts runs for about 5 secs and stalls. Etc. No twisting of the throttle keeps the engine a light. Sounds like not enough fuel in maybe the float level is too low and runs out of fuel. The carb was a mess before I started cleaning them . I made sure none of the passage ways where block by blowing compressed air though them.
Oil level- I have bleed the the oil filter cover bleed screw and the oil comes flying out and hits the exhaust. So I guess the oil pump is working.
I have checked the oil level with the engine warm and running on the side stand. Geoff has mentioned the bike should be up right when checking.
I have followed the manual a put 2.4 Litres in the engine and this does not show up on the dip stick at all.
