Yep hours & hours of reading on the heat the generated, some use a alloy heat sink, some use a fan & ive seen one with a wick (seriously) but from reading the feedback lots of people said they was faulty, and that's the problem with buying this stuff, its all cheap shite Chinese crap.

I've also read this about replacement bulds so until they can sort there LED technology, I won't bother. In the mean time I'll get two Aurora Duellys. Not cheap, but not as cheap as other high end LEDs. My LED light for night MTB riding was about $300, but that's the way it goes for good qual gear.

Actually what I plan to do with the original head light is to check voltage drop ffrom bty to light and possible run a 5mm wire with fuse and relay direct to head light fitting to minimize volt drop and also to replace the bulbs with new as I have heard that they do lose output as they age.
Should improve things for urban area when you can use spotties.

If you do that you could use higher wattage H4 bulbs, 100/80w or 130/90w

There might be legal issues if you're worried about that kind of thing.

Be careful, you will run into problems of exceeding the total alternator output which is not much more than 140watts (from memory).

Teneroma, your XTZ660 puts out 14V 24.5A at 5000rpm which is 343watts & about 300watts from 2500rpm (looking at the graph in the manual )
You would need to work out what the other loads on the system are (ignition, tail light, heated grips, electronic gizzmos etc.) & how much power you want in reserve to keep the battery charged then decide which bulbs to put in.

I may be missing the point here but why not use spots for night riding, I did a 36 hour enduro in Italy last year on my bmw 1150gs with some of these bad boys, it was like turning the sun on

Firstly, I did not realize I was in a 3AJ thread, oops.

I was aware of total output not been that great, hence the LED spots, I was also aware that good qual bulbs will help, putting stronger H4 in, might be a good point, but total available power is the issue as I do run other stuff, heated grips, etc, but more importantly at night time I find I'm more in cruse mode, thus would not be running at higher revs..

I've downloaded a light meter for the iPhone so will try to bench mark existing output to see improvements.
