Damn, what a journey. Its been more than six months since I posted my first question in this thread. The combination of being a total newbie and having a frankensteiner bastard bike makes progress a bit hard. I now receive good help and work more or less every other weekend.

Since I asked about CDI advice in this thread I discovered that I have a really weak spark. Hence I have removed the entire wiring harness, tested it for bad connections and its now inserted inserted again. This has fixed the no spark problem, leaving me at square one with a bike that will not start - presumably due to mistiming issues.

The 3aj has extra wires for the side stand and neutral switch cut outs. It is possible to ignore these wires and just use the eight essential wires. From the alternator there are five wires. Two for AC power for the CDI (red & brown) and three for the timing trigger pulse (red/white,green/white,green). There are three other wires needed (orange,black) to the coil and black/white for the kill switch. These are common to all 600cc cdi bikes from 1983 to 1989.

Actionman, your describtion of the wires for the CDI is really helpfull. But Im having trouble with the ones that you say are responsible for the timing trigger pulse. The colors you mention (red/white,green/white,green) match what I got on my new CDI (the aftermarket one that is exactly like the ones from a 34 L / 55 W) but the colors do not seem to match with the 3AJ wires. Aren't these three wires from the alternator the ones responsible for the pulse (3AJ diagram):



To make matters worse (or at least a bit more complicating), I just discovered that my engine is 2KF (thats written on the engine) and that might explain why I can't match the wires from the alternator to either the 3AJ diagram or your (Melb) describtion/my new CDI.

This is how the wires from my unknown alternator looks like:



I think the three wires on the left (under my thumb) were the ones connected to my old CDI and responsible for timing. The colors are: black/yellow, green/white, blue/yellow (does this match a 2kf alternator?)

Can't remember where the blue is running to - but it surely has nothing to do with the CDI.

The light brown and the red wire match your description of providing AC power for the CDI.


Can you guys make any sense of this? Any suggestions regarding which of these wires are the triggering pulse ones (if any) and how they are to be connected with the CDI will be highly appreciated? Its nice that I learn and that I get my pale office hands dirty - but holy smokes I want to again

OK, that got my attention..

But it is after midnight in Croatia and I fly back to Melbourne tomorrow.

I dont have any of my tech stuff with me to refer to....

If you read the manual and know how it works then diagnosis becomes simple.

There are 5 wires coming from the alternator area on just about any 600 motor.

Brown and red supply AC voltage at up to 300v to charge the CDI capacitor.

To fire the spark, there are two firing coil spaced about 12 degrees BTDC and another at about 35 degrees BTDC. The two coils are wired with one wire in common, therefore there are only three trigger wires. (common, idle, full speed) On every 600 single with CDI that I have seen, there is always a 3 way connector for the trigger coils. This is to prevent accidental mixup. The colours may vary, but the function is identical.

Mezo has loaded workshop manuals on this site and Yamaha provide a step by step trouble shooting for a "No spark condition".
Use them....

Just looking at your photo I see the danger signs of severe corrosion at one of your connectors. You will have to check and clean every one to have a reliable bike.

Newer been to Croatia myself. Many of the surrounding contries, but never Croatia. It has been known for being less touristed than some of the neighbouring contries. Noticed you mentioned flocks of german tourists. Is that a general or local phenomenon?

Will catch up on the great info you have provided. (Im repeating myself) New to all of this, so progress is a bit slow.

The corrosion visible on the picture is on a blinded wire, and I guess thats the only part og the wiring that hasn't received TLC. A bit embarrising :)

Yes, Croatia is beutiful and fantastic for bikes. The geman tourists in both red Audie's and bikes, usually BM's are known locally as "Schwabe's" Not derogitory I think. Mainly found on the coast and many with nice girlfriends bathing Eurostyle!!
