First you have to understand that a motorcycle and car alternator are very different in operation. :book:

The typical motorcycle alternator uses permanent magnets and as a result, it's output is constant and always to the MAXIMUM. Any excess power not used in the lighting or ignition has to be "burned off" in the regulator as heat and wasted power.

The car alternator has a non-permanent magnet that is wound with wire to give a VARIABLE magnet and controllable output from zero to maximum. This means that the load on the engine is only enough to charge the battery and run the lights. (more efficient and less fuel used).

This means that the motorcycle alternator must be carefully matched to the electrical needs of the bike. If you add a larger unit without need for more wattage, you are just wasting precious engine power and fuel.

So I stopped worrying and lo and behold, things did get worse!

Stator assy from KLR650 up to 2007 (CDI) is the same. I have find out, that for KLR650 are available in 280W and 400W - http://advrider.com/index.php?threads/k ... ep.182385/

Finally after few weeks I have got a stator http://www.electrosport.com/stator-klr6 ... -280w.html from US and finally stator is now installed. Yesterday I have made the short test (50km) and seems to be ok.

I guess that now I can switch on both front lights :wink2:. Due the fact, that current upgraded stator is still around 22A (during normal trip, but under 25A for sure - see below), I dont need to replace voltage regulator (25A).

So the KLR stator is a direct bolt on ? good to know .

For regulator/rect. and high cap stators there are MOSFET series style(instead of oem shunt) that can be converted to these bikes. They reduce the load on the stator thus is much better for it . The oem shunt style always pulls the maximum amount of current from the stator and anything not need by lights, signals, ect.. is grounded out in the form of heat . The MOSFET series style only pulls as much current as is needed by the accessories and no more is used so the stator doesn't produce it. , keeping it cooler and longer living. Also uses less internal resistance so more of the stator output is used for running stuff . But no I haven't done it to any of mine so I can't really say a wiring diagram .

Yes... only small challenge is to organizes cables, but it could take less than 10min. After 350km still working great - now I can turn on the lights, charge GPS and use fully heated grips.
Strator looks little bit smaller compare to original stator.

:omg: Thanks Mezo, :confetti: I'm going to take my stator to Better Bikes in town. https://bettabikes.com and let him have a look at it. If all goes well it should only cost me $195 for the rewind. Failing that Pitmans in town have a new original one for $300, not a bad buy. :sherlock:
