It does sound like the spring has streched, but until you get in there you wont know Rik.

Have now got access and it looks like it is the problem. Tried turning the starter gear by hand that connects the starter motor and the starter clutch gear sometimes it just spins and sometimes it turns the motor overso am assuming that's where the problem lies. Am having trouble though undoing the large nutty getthe starter clutch off.The bike is on my ramp at the moment so I can't really get any purchase to undoe the nut. My plan is to get the bike off the ramp put it in gear and get the good lady to lean on the rear brake to hopefully so things moving. Am I correct in thinking that the large nut undoes in the usual way ie anti clockwise? Thought I should check befor I damage anything.

Do you mean the flywheel nut?.....

Yep - the one on the end of the crankshaft. I guess I will also need flywheel puller too. Have sen one on Yambits web site for £17 which looks safer than some of the other methods I have seen on Youtube where folks are using bolts that thread I tot the end of the crankshaft and then wallop it with a hammer, which feels a bit radical. Not sure who safe this method is and don't want to damage the thread/crankshaft otherwise bike will be scrap.........

Yes it's a normal thread, they're not usually that tight to be honest.... your big problem will be removing the flywheel once you've got the nut off.... I use a Halfords universal puller slightly modified to fit the XT flywheel, I've done loads with it now.

Whatever you do, do NOT hit the flywheel or the puller with a hammer... get your puller on as tight as you can & pour boiling water on it, tap the flywheel with a soft faced mallet....

Geoff has done loads of these now, sometimes you get lucky & sometimes its as tight as a fishes areshole.

Right then it looks like copious amounts of boiling water being poured over the flywheel shortly before turning the flywheel puller. Best get a bucket ready as we'll then. Looking forward to the "experience"later in the week. Failing that it will get some attention from my rubber mallet.

Ventured into the garage tonight to have a go at undoing the flywheel nut. Had her indoors standing on the brake pedal with gearbox in 5th but all to no avail. Bike was on paddock stand so will try again at the weekend with bike on the ground. Will also try warming the nut up with the boiling water approach to see if that helps. Haven't got access to air gun so will have to see if the Heath robinson approach works.......
