Just out of interest, how exactly do you google an unknown part on your bike? I've tried typing "thingumy" and "whatchumacallit" and haven't got anywhere. Do you put in the part number or something?
This is a skill I'd very much like to acquire :)

  "thingumy" got 737000 hits! I googled for carb pics of the XT600Z and eventually found some micro fiche on a russian site, found the part no. and googled that, and found a lot of info on german sites!

You mean the Service Manual for XT600Z(U) '88 in the section: Manuals, part numbers, diagrams?
I didn't find it in those micro fiche. Maybe the altitude compensator wasn't on all 3AJ model years!?

Also on that russian site the part isn't shown on the carb fiche but the frame fiche.

My 1990 3AJ is imported from Germany so maybe it was stock there too!?

On this german site are listed the 3AJ's models that had the altitude compensator thingy (Part number 2WJ-14303-01-00):
http://www.xt-foren.de/dcforum/dcboard. ... 7540&page=

I've looked thru some of the fiche for the 3AJ years on this russian site:
http://www.megazip.ru/ru/bike/yamaha/view/1267
and it seems the german models have them but the others don't (I haven't looked at them all so I might be wrong).

For example, here is the fiche for same model as my 1990 3AJ german sold machine:
http://www.megazip.ru/ru/bike/yamaha/vi ... 12#g165092
The part 42 hovering over the frame, mid-air.

Googling the p/n I found this pdf: http://www.autocd.info/autocd/MC/A4PT300E.PDF
If you look at the "Intake 2" page you can see the part and that seems to be on a XT600E model code: 4SL7 for Switzerland.

I got the carbs stripped down and rebuilt (not rejetted) in Tarija. Unfortunately, I wasn't present to see exactly what the mechanic did but the bike is running great up to about 2500 metres but struggling above that. I don't want to jet down any further because I like things at sea level (I suffer worse than the bike at altitude, maybe I should try smoking less than 40 a day).
So, the moral of the story: Any spluttering, probably a carb problem.
