Details from a 1989 Dakar "Supertenere"

Post by vander »

Last week I saw this at the Barcelona Boat Show.

Nothing less than a Dakar bike. This bike belongs to Xavi Riba, a spanish rider that competed in the 1993 Paris-Dakar with this unit. I can not confirm this point, but in spanish forums I read that this bike was the one Franco Picco used in the 1989 Dakar. That year Picco finished in 2nd position. But I doubt this is the real bike, as I found pictures of that bike standing in a museum. I think this was in fact a trainning bike of Picco, but its just my theory and I am nobody.

And now, pictures.

Rear rack. Phantastic.
I allways thought this bikes had two separate rear tanks, but we see there is just one cap.

Front tanks and filter. Simple union for the twin tanks.

Nice disc and simple caliper

Small cooling tank behind the cockpit

And a small filter connected to it

Swingarm, with what looks like a tank for something. I oppened it and its just more space for tools and spares. First I thought it could contain an air pump. This piece also works a second kickstand for easy tire changes.

Radiator. The pipes go to the left side, when in the stock ST go to the right. Compulsory potable water tank.

I left something curious until the end. This bike is registered as a Yamaha 3VD... a google search gives us that 3VD is the technical naming for the... TDM's!! You can see there reads TDM850 also. The TDM first came out in 1991, after this bike actually existed. I have no explanation for this. The frame is clearly a YZE/XTZ type.

Hope this was of your interest.

By the way ... wasn´t it somewhere here sombody told us:

The owner is Xavi Riba, the Dakar rider, but the bike is used to gain attention for Napapijri, a brand of clothing. I suspect this brand is ownwed by the Bultó family, whose grandfather is the actual founder of BULTACO. Some Dakar, enduro, SBK, MotoGP and car racers in this family (they have fuel in their veins...). For example Sete GIbernau is of this family (complet name Sete Gibernau Bultó).

Napapijri uses the norwegian flag just because it looks cool and show an adventurous image. Norge people, crazy people smile:

Hello has all.

I am fascinated by these motorcycles of Dakar. She is magnificent. Or is this motorcycle? In Spain? Is she in a museum?
It is the motorcycle of Riba in Dakar 1993. It is not the meme that that of the 1991 and 1992. It is another motorcycle.
