Need some more advice regarding the crank. There is a small amount of movement ( up and down) of the crank in the left side case, the bearing is a C (high speed with 3 thou clearance). Now I know there should be no movement at all so I took the motor to 2 bike shops that specialize in Thumpers and both said basically it's the free play in the bearing and maybe the case where the bearing sits has gotten a little loose ( Yamaha cases are noted for this one said). Both said to live with it and it shouldn't hurt the motor?? Will some of the play take up when she warms up? I also asked my brother who is a Ducati trained mechanic and he many years ago replaced his crank for the same reason only to find when the new one went in it was loose too. Should I go with the fingers crossed method or is there something else I could do?

PS I checked as best I could with a test-dial indicator and there maybe 5 thou movement up, maybe less as it was hard to stop the motor moving when testing.

Yes Dan had the loose bearing on the crank which they all seem to have, but mine seems to be loose in the side cases. Should I go with it or find new cases? Anyone?

The crankcases have a "cast in" steel support ring for the bearings. :sherlock:

It is EXTREMELY unlikely that the is any movement in the case support, in fact you had to heat the cases to get the bearing to slide in!!

C3 bearings are the loosest standard bearings available and are used in mass produced automotive applications to hide minor (acceptable)
machining errors.

Chillax over this "problem" and move on to the next challenge.. :lol:

Dropped my pipes and tank into the powder coaters for a bit of sand blasting.

Just got the under side and seam blasted as there was a bit of surface rust.

Gave the pipes a squirt of heat proof black stuff.

Also got the motor etched primed.

Then painted the next day.

Very neat, wish i had a picture of the other clown that did the sandblasting in the plastic pool, now that was another story :guinness: Keep it up.
