Tenere xtz 660 1993 hard/no start

Back to it, my tenere (has 53k on odo) now has good spark ones again. But the main problem still isnt gone, ever since I bought the bike it never started great. Ussualy took atleast 1-2 min of on/off pressing the starting button, when it did start it ran good. However now it doesnt seem to start at all anymore, the starter motor sounds good, I have spark, carbs got a rebuild.. I did clean the carbs ones and it started right away! However I think that was blatend luck, because right afterwards it didnt want to start. Its been standing for a few months however, so maybe I have to clean it again? I also did do a compression test, this gave me 90psi however I heard that it could be becuase the bike has a decompresion system at start up? And the bike ran good so id doubt its compression. Any ideas this is what I know, im kinda out of ideas and almost thinking about selling the damn thing at a loss... help is appreciated.

Hey,
I've had the same symptoms and I've put it down to a slow fuel leak. My carb drain valve isn't great and I think when I leave it stand for a week or more the fuel slowly leaks out and evaporates so there's no obvious puddle, then the bike needs a bit of cranking to pull enough fuel through the pump to refill the carb.

I've not fixed or proven this theory yet but I'm in the middle of a rebuild at the moment and will be replacing the drain valve bolt for a fresh one

I've not noticed any leaking or smelled something tbh.. maybe I should crank the bike and spray some fuel straight into the cylinder, that will proof wether its the carb.. or a bigger problem. I really hope its not piston rings or something, would make things more difficult. Keep me updated!

I wouldn’t get too stressed with what needs repairing eventually. Nothing on these basic singles is as bad as it seems once you know what the problem is. Even if the rings are shot, it’s not a massive job, and you’d wonder what the fuss was about once you’ve done it. Do your valves etc and compression test it. Follow the manual and borrow or get someone to help with the specialist tools. You’ll be all over it. 👍
