What Bike or Bikes Do You Own?: Tenere 3aj

3AJ rally tower build

Post by agiannouk »

Hello everybody,

I'm new here and hopefully a new owner of a tenere. I'm young and I have this nostalgia about the old bikes, especially the retro tank looks and that's why i decided to go for an old tenere xt600z instead of a newer xt660(2008).
I love this look on the Tenere with the custom tower:

My question is, in my country they sell the 1vjs for gold but the 3aj pretty cheap 2k-2,5k.
Can I remove the front fairing of the 3aj that I really don't like and have a 1vj look?
I've searched a lot about a "naked" look on the 3aj but nothing to be found, only this photo that gave me an idea of what the tank will look like:

My thoughts are
-putting a high front fender from xt600
-removing front fairing and put either a modern rally tower or the 1vj mask
-replacing the side fairings with 1vj or artesia(is this possible?) or removing them

Are any of these possible? I know the connections on the tank will be exposed if I remove the front mask but I don't think I care, mabe I can trim them If I finalize the look.

Thank you everyone

Anything is possible with time and money! The rally look is fun but you’ll always have a 35+ year old bike under the new livery; most people on this forum are upgrading suspension to actually make the bike perform like a rally bike.

My 1VJ came with a fiberglass fairing to make it look like a 3AJ but the headlights are their own mount.

I took the fairing off to drop weight for the trails.

If you ditch any of the 3AJ plastics would you consider selling them here on the forum? Original plastics are becoming very hard to find.

Just as a note, Yamaha lowered the 3AJ front fender to improve airflow to the cylinder head. The 1VJ model was prone to overheating though it takes a lot to break that engine. The 3AJ head design was improved in conjunction with the lowered fender.

Thank you very much for the reply, of course I will have to take care of the fork and rear suspension. I love the old bike sound, I wish I could get a 1vj with kickstart as well but as I told are very rare here.
The rally look is just a 400-500upgrade that can also stay for future bikes as well and I might even go with a naked cyclops headlight style in front.

The thing I noticed on the rebuild photo i posted is that on the 3aj the tank gets further in front(bigger?) and reaches almost on the side of the fork, will this be a problem to transfer any fairings from 1vj? Regardless that it seems that if I trim the remaining connections the naked 3vj tank will look almost the same with the 1vj's.

Hi,
a late friend of mine rebuilt his 3AJ
its a bit of fabricating and no bolt-on solution but its all mild steel :-)

You need to fabricate covers for the front fairing mounts on the tank, and then fit any enduro lamp mask (preferrably from a 1VJ). I may have all the parts you need ... we have to check via PM

To convert a 3AJ engine to additional kickstart is just a matter of sourcing parts, the opening in the clutch cover is already there, and with a manual decompression lever you mainly need the kickstarter shaft, gears, kickstart lever.

PS the grey lamp mask is from a Puch scooter from the 1960ies ... https://www.puchklub.at/Home/index.php/ ... nu-item-51
