34L Headlight insert for Australia/UK needed

Post by Aussiesven »

G'day everyone... first time at this forum, needing some help with one part.

As you may have heard, Brisbane / Australia was badly flooded in January this year and as luck wanted it (or bad planning, should have pushed my Tenere up the hill...), we got 2m of water through the house, and the poor XT as well. Although I plugged it up well, the water still made it into every crevice. But no problem, after 28 years it needed a proper restauration anyway...

So, most parts I need have been sourced, everything is ready for repainting, but, as the bike was originally from Germany, I am still after a headlight insert for riding on the left hand side of the road, i.e. a UK / Australia or else...

The highbeam "wedge" is on the opposite side of the glass...so, to get it registered in Australia once it has been restored I need a "left hand" version. They are not available anymore from Yamaha (so I have been told by the dealer).

Would anyone be able to help, either with the part itself, a contact where to best find parts in the UK/Australia (tried the usual websites, but no luck yet) or any other link to find a headlight insert.

Thank you very much in advance; looking forward to getting the restoration under way soon...

Im pretty sure the 1VJ lens will work Sven? im looking at both the 34L & 1VJ fiche & it looks identical, worth asking if they are still available.

Im wondering if the XT600E lens is the same? and they would be still available for sure.

Gimme a couple of days & ill try and find out for you.

OK, bit of investigation. :sherlock:

Part number 5IY-84320-H0 is basically the crossover part (superceeded number)

According to my research an 1989 TZR250 or DT125LC headlamp is the same thing.

Now that`s all from the UK so its the same side of the road (the proper side) but i don't give any guarantees of this fact im just pointing you hopefully in the right direction, two shops in Sydney show the part but my mate reckons that's because they have not updated there system for years & if you rang them they would say its obsolete, and the price is pretty steep anyhow.

You need to double double check this & if im right it will work.

This insert is from a XT125 in UK: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/YAMAHA-XT125 ... 3a466bb576 EXPENSIVE!!!

It has similar appearance to the 34L insert (correct adjuster locations) - cross check on the parts lists.

The 34L insert was also used on the standard XT 600 and XJ750, so keep an eye open on fleaBay.

An alternative is to apply insulation tape over the non-compliant portion of the lens - in Victoria this is accepted for RWC & I've seen this pass MOT in UK. As long as the headlight works...

Here is a fleaBay item 320730517785. Currently Buy it Now ($202) or Make Offer from Perth.

This is the correct lens for Australia (non-handed) with RH parklight 51Y-84320-H0.

Good luck
