As far as using mismatched cases goes... I was gonna build an engine bottom half up... tighten all the bolts and see if everything turns ok... if it did I would then check the surface where the barrel joins the cases & if necessary have it machined for a good joint.... but like I say, I don't need to now as I've found a good set. Can't see why it wouldn't work though

I tried joining 2 mismatched cases last week... gearshafts turn really smooth, I didn't try the crank but I'm sure it would be fine.
If I didn't have my spare set these would be going back, I'd just put lots of gasket on them..

Got my 1VJ cases in the mail recently and finally had the time to set about cleaning them up and knocking in new bearings. I think I finally understand after all these years how to do this sort of thing so I'm hoping this rebuild goes smoother than previous years. Even got to use a famous Tenere forum specialty tool. Which one of you made this crankshaft protector again?





I hope to drop in the the transmission and crank and close up the halves by the weekend. Then, as they say, you merely draw the rest of the fucking owl

Old man Dave (Actionman) made it for me, it sat in my toolbox for years unused & either i sent it to you direct or i sent it back to Dave in Melbourne & he sent it along with some other stuff?? that i cannot remember it was ages ago.

Got the bottom end tightened up and the right side reassembled. Gears and crank move smoothly and shifting is working as normal.

Now I'm moving up in the world and looking at the top end, but I have acquired quite a few sets of matching and mismatching cylinders, heads, pistons and valve covers so I'm trying to figure out which is which.

Can anyone shed some light on the difference between a 1JK head and a 2KF head? Both bolt patterns matches the 3AJ cylinder so that's good, but I cannot remember what the difference between the two models is. I can see a different casting mold was used, or the machining process was different, but the head gasket used is the same, I think.



Also is it okay to put OEM Yamaha piston rings on a Wiseco piston? I have a nice high comp piston from a previous bike that I'd like to use, but I only have OEM rings. Wiseco rings aren't expensive but perhaps the OEM will fit? Other forum conversations indicate no.

Not sure where the 1JK code originates from Scottie? or even if its from a XT? the 2KF is easy its in the model codes section on here & is XT600 1987 2KF USA,CAN your fellow American (xtrider) was talking about this back in 2014 HERE..

Did you notice the extra bit of meat on xtriders 1JK head that Scotties head doesn't have.

That's strange! Perhaps they switched casting molds halfway in the model? Still would love to have a SRX600 (too bad they are kick only, otherwise I could have gotten my girlfriend one).

Just do a 4PT engine swap, or 3TB if you cannot source the latter, you could also do a kicker conversion on either motor (best of both worlds).
