I need a replacement left hand handlebar switch for my XT600E 1990.
I can't find one anywhere. Usual suppliers cannot. Nothing appears on Ebay specific to my bike, except overpriced old and manky examples.
I have a switch, which appears to be, shown online as, suitable for DT125, DT250 & XT500. Its Ally bodied so has no earth wire and needs to earth through the handlebar, but I can deal with that.
I have identified all the wires to match my bike's wiring, covering I am pretty sure, all the functions, but there are 3 wires left over on the new switch.
They are Green/Red, Green/White & White.
Can anybody tell me how they should be connected, or can I just ignore them ?

Re: XT600E 3TB L/H switch
Well I found a DT125 wiring diagram which does indeed reveal "W/G, W/R & W" wires from the L/H switch, which run to the flywheel generator.
Wondering how/why the L/H switch would have anything to do withe the generator, I thought of it the other way around. I've no experience of the XT500 or DT2125, but my guess is, maybe their lights are directly powered from the generator and so it is connected to the switch.
So I'll try connecting up the new switch ignoring these 3 wires and see what happens.

Re: XT600E 3TB L/H switch
Thats exactly right, the switch is for AC headlight. Problem may be that the main headlight switch on (some of) these bikes is in the ignition lock which has a seperate position for riding with lights on. You will see.Hatrack wrote: Sat Apr 18, 2020 10:47 am Well I found a DT125 wiring diagram which does indeed reveal "W/G, W/R & W" wires from the L/H switch, which run to the flywheel generator.

As Andy has said, just be careful with Yamaha TDM 850/900 switch gear. Take a very close look at the switch you want to buy. Over the different model variations and years the specific switches changed sides.
I went with kill switch and starter on the right hand side, the rest on the other. But you can get models with a three position light switch on the right and therefore missing off the left controls.
Don't ask me how I know all this
And be very careful with used ebay switchgear, there's a lot of rubbish on there.

We spoke about this a few years ago, READ HERE.
Basically there are Chinese jobbies with Chinese quality, but you can use OEM from other manufactures as long as the bar width is the same, its just a matter of matching the wires (no biggie).

Re: XT600E 3TB L/H switch
Well, I do not like any dip switch that has the lights off switch directly below hi beam/low beam postions. The possibilitry of switching from hi beam, and accidently going past the low beam position, to lights off, in the face of oncoming traffic that you've just tried to dip for, does not appeal.
I have one of that type in a box and would never use it. Thats why I've gone for an old style switch, possibly of slightly less good build, but having had it apart to check connections and grease with red rubber silicon grease. It works Ok and is actually a lot easier to dis-assemble/re-assemble than many OME switches.
Later today or tomorrow I hope to be able to test the lights, horn & indicators as I have them connected, and if successful, will post which wires I have connected.

Re: XT600E 3TB L/H switch
As promised:
DT125/DT250 pattern ally bodied switch fitted to 3TB 1990 XT600E works!
DT125/DT250 to XT600E Loom colours
Cable colours at multipin connector
Yellow & White to Brown (power to headlight switching) This is the only significant colour match
Green to Light Green (low beam) The rest are just different shades which could be confusing.
Yellow to Yellow (high beam)
Dark Blue to Blue (parking/dash/tail)
Brown & White to Brown & White (power from flasher unit)
Brown to Dark Brown (L/H flash)
Dark Green to Dark Green (R/H flash)
Pink to Pink (horn)
The Green & White, Green & Red and White cables from the new switch do nothing and are not used.
