1986 XT600 1VJ Gauloises refurb

Post by Phill Cowdery »

Hi

I am new to the forum

I have a 1986/7 XT 600 1VJ Gauloises Dakar replica
It is just about finished but will not fire up ( did in December 2019 )
Electric start just clicks on the on off switch
Electrics seem ok indicators lights etc
Kick start seems very stiff as though something is stuck with the starter engaged
took the starter off that works ok as a test on jump leads
The bike i would say has been stored for many years before i had it

Could something be stuck with the kick start or starter clutch

Your thoughts would be great

I moved your post to a more relevant section & tidied up your pics, very nice looking bike by the way.

So are you saying you cannot fire the bike on kickstart? or bump start?

EDIT: The starter clutch could be an issue, i`ll let others chime in on this one. :bag:

I guess you need to look for a mechanical issue then [ if the starter motor is operating ] and the kick starter is not moving anything. you need to write a list of possible causes and then start at the most simple. l am not a mechanic so no list from me. If you are not mechanically minded or confident a qualified mechanic will be able to sort it

He's already proved its not the starter Spike, although they can operate differently under load & free spinning & none of us use mechanics on here, we are the mechanics.

Hi

Thanks for comments on the bike it has come out well

If it would start obviously

I took the starter inspection cover off it all looked ok, tried the kick start with the sprocket off to the starter and all seems normal

Just thinking could it be the starter button itself

Simple things 1st
1. Was it running before, have you changed anything.
2. Check why the bike can't be turned over on the kick start - very important, could be lots of things, starter clutch, actual clutch, bike in gear, clutch switch, neutral switch?
3. Reconnect the starter motor but don't mount it to the engine. See if the wiring is correct and that pressing the starter button does actually turn the starter over.

Hi,
I had the exact same issue after my rebuild, the kick start was stiff and I could hear a slow gearing noise which was the starter turning with.
The reason is the starter freewheel which is locked on the starter primary big gear wheel behind the rotor.
You can check it easily by removing the small starter cover on the left engine side cover. you'll see the starter gearing turmning whick you kick.
I was able to start the bike and unlock it by pressing the starter button while kicking, however after stopping the engine it got stuck again 9 time out of 10.
During the engine rebuild, the freewheel was the only part I hadn't completely disassembled, I cleaned it and washed it many times in fuel but without removing it from the rotor. This was a mistake, it was in fact not deeply clean, the freewheel is very sensitive to any particle or chip.
So I disassembled again the rotor from the crankshaft and removed the frewheel from the back of the rotor. You have to remove the 3 screws which are "punch locked" at their end (don't know thnow the english word for that... ), an impact gun helps here.
The freewheel looked clean but there were some particles and chips locked inside. I cleaned it like a surgery room and reassembled enerything (punch lock the 3screws again). Now everything works again perfectly!

Hi

That sounds the same thing

I did take the inspection cover off and it did kick over free but the flywheel was spinning
As soon as put it back stuck again
Will this stop the electric start operating aswell
Perhaps i need to take the thing apart

Thanks
