hey guys, i just purchased a 2010 xtz660 in australia. 50,000 k's. Im concerned at how hot it runs. there is significant melting in certain spots on the lower left side of the bikes plastics. the engine warning light has never come on. The radiator fan has never turned on. The fan fuse is good. She has plenty of coolant. im not sure where to start. i do have the workshop manual.. any ideas fellas? cheers, BYRON NSW AUS

Well first thing i would do is test your fan, just unplug it & run 12V to it from the battery, if that works then it could be the thermo switch.

They do run hot but should not be melting plastics, there are settings you can adjust via the dash (co setting rings a bell), has it had any of the kev mods added?

he is in Oz, exhaust air valve intact? (think thats what its called) until the end of the year there was an 660 specific forum but that has now folded, there are a few facebook groups that support them you may want to look for, we tried to cater for the mark but not many takers have come forward so far. Like Mezo says, check the fan with a direct feed just to confirm it works

There will be a sensor/switch in the coolant system, triggers the fan at a preset temp, there are online downloadable pdf service manuals, have a Google.

I use the term thermo switch rather than stat, if you Google image search the two terms you will understand.

Thanks, I’ll have a look. If the bikes run quite hot, then would there be any down side to wiring the fan to the ignition circuit and having it always on? I would never be riding the bike below 10’C ambient temp anyway.

Not really i guess, better to run cool than hot, but for resale point of view its a bodge & if i saw that id be wondering what else has been bodged? and has it been serviced properly etc, its your bike & its up to you.
