Hello,
I made this thread earlier but deleted it since I figured out how the kick shaft turns over the crank.
But now I'm thinking what happens with the kick shaft if the engine us running? Wouldn't it spin along with the kickstart lever as the engine is running?
I'm currently reassembling my 3AJ kickstarter conversion and it makes me deeply paranoid that something might not work right and my engine gets damaged.
Regards
How does the kickstarter work?

Stop over thinking it! And definitely don't try to kick it over with the engine running - lots of unwelcome noise! If you type xt600 engine into youtube there are a few very good engine assemblies there

Re: How does the kickstarter work?
It has a freewheeling assembly, as most bicycle rear hubs have.
Thats the ratcheting sound you hear when kicking over with ignition off, and the kickstart lever comes back up.
So no worries there.
To prevent the ratchet from making noise and wearing out while the engine is running, it is lifted by a guide and so gets disengaged once the kickstart lever is near top position.

That's what I did, I also used a few diagrams to install the parts correctly.charliext1vj wrote: Mon Mar 18, 2019 7:19 pm If you type xt600 engine into youtube there are a few very good engine assemblies there
Before I installed the clutch I was pulling the lever up and down and see how the mechanism works. There was no disengaging.motorang wrote: Tue Mar 19, 2019 9:54 am It has a freewheeling assembly, as most bicycle rear hubs have.

The ratched guide I installed didn't seem to do anything. And yes it was screwed in with the little arm facing out of the engine over the stopper plate.
Both gears were just spinning freely.
Part of me thinks this is fine and I should just go on but my paranoia is holding me back

It has been a while since I have done one but I trust this chaps video's and he demonstrates if it is working before the case goes on;

Agh, I never heard that ratching sound when I actuated the lever without the clutch installed
Might have to remove the spark plug
