Got my 1Vj but it's a 1Vk

After a little bit if searching I finally got my hands on a 1Vk, the Swiss version of 1VJ Was looking for a 1VJ but this came up. Engine has no numbers, just the 1Vk and then blank but has never had numbers so I'm assuming crankcase replaced after the notorious overheating struck. Airbox nicely modified with the air now coming from the seat area.. Oil gushes very merrily into the oil tank so I'm guessing it had 3AJ oil pump upgrade after the overheat. Oil drain plug was not standard, consisting of a plug with threaded centre into which an oil temp sensor is screwed in, perhaps the previous owner used to keep an eye on temp after rebuild, or worse case the threads in casing are knackered and the insert saves further damage. Smokes a little on start up when I've left it fir a week or two so I guess valve guides a little worn. I found battery was toast, wouldn't turn over starter even when charged so I ordered a battery based on part number only to find that the battery fitted is a yb14L-B2 which I think is not standard, nice motobatt now fitted, mbtx14au I think is what I got..Fuel pump was removed but I have one I can fit if I get the urge to do so. Carbs overflow sometimes so I've ordered an overhaul kit. Rear tyre was 20 years old so I've fitted a mitas e7.. I bought the bike on spec, based on photos and knowledge that the seller is a genuinely honest person with high standards even though they were in effect a middle man ( don't ask) All in all I'm a happy bunny but I'll be getting history from previous owner in Germany to see what the story us on mods

Like it a lot - some interesting little bits - I see the fork legs have been dropped - but why the spacer that has been added to the rear foot rests - small passenger?

The rear R pin is upside down - but that's just detail!

Interesting observations Charlie. I hadn't even twigged about the rear footrests, must have been for a small passenger alright, I think I'll leave it as is for the moment in case I give one of my kids a spin. The upside down R is my fault after fitting new tyre, I'll rectify that and raise the forks up to original height. I did notice a fair bit of flex in the forks when I brake, I couldn't rememeber my 43F doing that but thats over 25 years ago so I might have forgotten that. I'll need to check the forks arent overly worn, loose or sloppy I guess.

On the PC now and still haven't got pics to load, when I press the add picture tab I get but can't seem to insert an image in there, I've done it before on a previous post so I would have thought it would be apparant to me again. On most forums I get a browse image tab popping up when I click on the add image part so I'm guessing website might have afew gremlins in it but I'll keep on trying anyway.

Also found a Touratech stainless steel pannier rack for kless than 100 euro delivered which I will be trying to modify some time to fit the bike. Seems doable but I'll post pics of that too when I figure this thing out. Ha, eventually twigged that I had had to post to that other photo hosting site, what a numpty I can be sometimes.

Before you put too much effort into the forks - look at the seals. perhaps even drain a little bit of oil. Unless they look new I would do the seals and oil not forgetting they are bigger on the tenere and get the right oil. IF oil is low can give the impression of flex you are talking about .

Ingenious temp gauge - what did the sensor connect to? I made one once for a 43F - as a regularly cooked it off road but this was a thermocouple bolted to the case - and red or green diode - - it worked fine it told me each time I cooked it!

The temp sensor doesnt connect to anything. Its on the list of questions I sent off to previous owner so might get to find out. Its a well thought out bike thats seen a good bit of use but been looked after. The toolkit was pretty nice, nice selection of tools and even a brand new sparkplug packed away in the deep channell in box. The lid even had a little bit of webbing very neatly rivetted on to act as a hinge, presumably the original plastic part of the lids hinge had given way under weight of tools.

Another thing, the serial number if the bike is under 1000, I would like to find out how many 1vk were produced. Is there an easy way of getting this info?

I've got a 1vk here in The Philippines. Sub 200 serial number.

Was this bike restricted in power for the Swiss Market and if so how would I de-restrict it?
