I was riding out into Kent last weekend, and my Tenere was getting all the attention when we stopped of course.
One gentleman who was impressed with it recalled a local garage who, no doubt years ago, specialised in modifying Tenere's for inter continental trips.
I can imagine this involved a whole heap of different mods. But one thing he mentioned was balancing the engine to reduce vibration on the big roads.
As I rode home, although I'd never noticed any vibration before, I couldn't help but feel that big single shaking my poor dedicate wrists and bum apart at speed.
So, does anyone know what engine balancing involves, and if anywhere in the south east of the UK still does it? I couldn't spot any threads on it. It might be a little indulgent, but I can imagine it reduces strain on a lot of engine components over time too.

I cant say I have ever heard or read anything about balancing the engine, balancing the crank is not so much balancing but truing it up, I thought that was what the balance shaft was for? I do remember reading that they changed size of the shaft after a certain model/year.

As Jibber says, the important part is a true crank, but only get this done if you need to split the cases to mend something else or you're planning a complete overhaul.
It's a single, they can't be balanced in the same way an inline twin, triple or four can as in making pistons & rods all the same weight then adding or removing weight from the crank for a dynamic balance.
On a single weight can be added or removed so the worst vibration happens in a different rev range, this is quite expensive and probably only useful for racers.
Knobbly tyres, bent/out of true rims, worn bearings, loose bodywork etc. all cause vibration.
If you think your engine is vibrating more than it should, listen for rattles, knocks & bangs then check the torque of the crank & balance shaft nuts under the clutch cover.
