I recently rebuilt the top end of my 1vj. knowing i was going to have to do the bottom end eventually as the gears and conrod are worn.
As the engine warms up and gets hot, from the top of the engine there's a tapping noise that taps with the revs, the tappets are adjusted correct, so could it be the worn conrod (new piston and wrist pin) letting the piston hit the head???
At first i thought it was a valve hitting the decompressor arm, but iv'e adjusted the life out of that!
Any thoughts?

Re: loose wrist pin
I doubt it would hit the head through small end wear, you say you have done the top end, how much play was in the small end? how worn was the bore and piston?

Re: loose wrist pin
Right, the engine had 42000 miles on it, original piston size, also 3rd and 5th gears worn, cam-chain stretched i would say all un touched.
the new wrist pin went straight in with play.
It was a lack of confidence as too why i didn't do the bottom end, saving it for next winter!
The tapping noise was there before i stripped the top end, thought it was a knackered timing chain, replaced that.
Like i said doesn't start making the noise until it warms up.
we did :
rebore
new piston
new cam-chain
valves lapped
