Hey up just thought Id post a quick message, basically my 1vj ran fine one day then the next would not start for love nor money.

Checked for fuel which was there, checked for spark which was there, clean air filter in, valve clearances checked ok, But still nothing she would even try.

Anyway I removed the choke and found the spring inside had broken, so i removed it completly and put a little bung in its place so in theory the choke will be fully on. Bike fired up immediately!

I subsequently found a spring cut it to size refitted it and she works like normal again.

I just thought it was worth a post as they seemed strange symtons for a defective choke and may help someone in future.

As Ive come to learn now you may have some little problems with a tenere But they will always get you home!!

i've got the same problem since i rebuilt the top end, mine does start but takes a while, deffo a choke problem. Will have a good look soon. I really just want a standard choke plunger , anyone have a spare?

Yes thats what im after just the plunger sort i find the cable version a bit of a pain.

Been searching for a while with no luck theres plenty in U.S but they are expensive.

Some one else might know, but gieven its a teikei carb, maybe the choke plunger is the same dimension on other Teikei Carbs eg. ttr250, xt225, tw200, TTR230.

Anyone experimented? which I did when I used to own a ttr250 at the same time as a xt600.

EDIT: or even just straight from a 1991 onward XT600? they are a simple plunger.+

Hi there,
on my late 1VJ version I fitted a choke button of the XT600 model (2KF).
Parts number is
2kf-14371-01

There are at least two different versions around, this one has an additional needle.

The other one with a flat end has the number 5Y1-1410A-00

So maybe check which version lives in your carb.

PS added later: If you carb had a flat end type choke plunger, you can modify the needle plunger by removing (breaking off) the needle.

Hi lads. That little ba****d with the extra needle caused me no end of bother last year. Make sure it's the one with just the rubber bung at the end. The needle keeps the choke's air bypass open and doesn't seal the hole. The choke is always on. I think it's for Californian machines with no fuel supply to the choke via the float chamber.
I was checking aftermarket ones on line and they all looked like it. I had no reference. Then I took the plunge and ordered a genuine one,£60. Happy days. Cured instantly. I only bother with Yamaha stuff now, despite the prices( apart from the obvious stainless zorst)
Now own a reprinted manual from that New Zealand guy. Life saver.
'86 1vj now pulls like a train. Until the salt killed everything trying to get to the dragon rally last month. Back in the workshop again. Hey ho.
