help 1vj head bolts

Post by anyware »

Newbee out of control! The old girl was down on compression and sounding tired ( bit like me i guess!) so i have taken the plunge to strip the top end down, all the bolts came out which was a relief, the head gasket was blowing and two of the shorter head bolts holding the barrel down were loose, i read somewhere about using the bolts from the 3aj, can anyone enlighten me on the subject please ? ps removing the flywheel is a bitch! :pleasesir:

HI,
you can reuse the old ones, no need to get new bolts there.

Thanks for the response, i read somewhere about a barrel modification that you guys do to stop the head gasget blowing again. Is it as simple as using the 3aj head to barrel bolts?

You can use the later 3AJ top end complete (slightly better cooling), IIRC the 3AJ does have 4 of the same length bolts, where as the 1VJ, IIRC has 2 shorter ones, the head gasket is also different in that it allows for an extra cap screw by the cam chain tunnel. whether you can modify the 1VJ barrel to accept longer bolts I dont know.
