OK so next question,
I Changed my clutch friction plates, on my 1vj and reassembled, pulled the clutch lever and the cable snapped.
(Very old cable).
I don't no which cable to order as the cable goes to the right side of the engine and not the left.
I orderd a 1995 xt600E cable which is to short (1meter outer) or maybe they gave me the wrong one?. The old snapped cable was 1 meter 15cm outer.
Does any one have a measurement or model number?.
Any help would be great.
Clutch cable length/model?

Re: Clutch cable length/model?
Hi there,
if it is the original engine you could buy a 1VJ cable, which is for XT600Z 1986-87 right?
If not you would have to check which engine lives in your bike, to be seen at the first three digits of the engine number (right hand side of the block, a bit hidden under the exhaust tube)

Re: Clutch cable length/model?
Thanks for your replies guys.
I'm waiting at the moment for an original Yamaha xt600E cable at the moment.
My engine casing with the number on it is the original number with 1vj at the start of it but the rest of the engine is not.
The barrel has 3AJ00 stamped on it.
The wheels, forks, swing arm are also from a later model but not sure which.
If this cables not right I'll try the model codes you said Geoff, by the way mate, fantastic restorations,
Very inspiring.
Thanks for the replys.

Re: Clutch cable length/model?
They all have those stampings on them, always confuses people.
What parts worked from previous models were carried over to newer models, hence 3AJ barrel, 3AJ oil pump etc etc,
Its not a Frankenstein bike.

There are 2 models of XT600E.... the 3TB which has the clutch cable going to the left side & the 4PT which is on the right.... you may have a 4PT engine in your bike or someone has converted your clutch to the latest spec... (something that Dave Lambeth does, a great idea if you can get the parts cheap enough)....
The later 660 Teneres... 3YF & 4MY share the same parts....
The future is not what it used to be....

Re: Clutch cable length/model?
It sounds like my bike has the 4PT engine then.
When I brought it a few years ago the seller said the whole engine except the casing with the numbers on had been swapped for a later one.
Would the 4PT engine have a CDi or TCI ?.

TCI
As for the engine, look for the engine number (first few letters) located behind the exhaust on the casing (the block) match that with the frame number stamped on the headstock on the right hand side, they should match.
Looks like this (not an xt600)

And the frame number is like this.

Re: Clutch cable length/model?
Looking at my engine and frame number they both match and begin with 1vj.
I just took a closer look at the TCI which is black and not brown and it has a small sticker on it saying 4PT and Denso so I guess that part of my bike and any related parts are from a xt600e 4pt.
I notice the coil is mounted in a different place also.
Would this also be different from the original 1vj ?.
Thanks for the help.

Pictures would be nice.
So does your TCI look like this? sockets on the box.

Mezo.
