Last night I bought a beautiful Xt500F

Thanks Tommy, just as it happens tommy I took the bottom of the carb off today removed the pin and float to clean inside then I took the long pin where the niddle passes though it it was part blocked so cleaned that and put it back together,
Now It will not start, I took it apart to check all that I have done, it all looks ok, tried to start it fired once briefly I can't get it started, have I missed something should I strip the top of the carb as well, any help would be much appreciated,

Just sounds as if you have the float the wrong way round unless the float needle is lodged closed stopping fuel entering the card, i think its the idle jet thats blocked
and you will need a long thin screwdriver to remove it, not unless you can pass some fine wire through it, i do have an ultra sonic bath if you want me to have a look
at your carb and drop it in the bath for an hour.

I asked the wife if she wanted one of the baths for Xmas she said no, the plug is wet with petrol, I can take it off and send it to you tommy if you don't mind doing that, that's very kind mate

Tommy I don't recall seeing a needle jet, would that fall out after removing the main jet holder

You have the needle jet should be a 220 and if its missing that will do it.

Done as you asked cleaned needle jet and carbs again put new spark plug in fired up first kick, sounds much better it run on and off the chock revs up as it should, I've had to stop as its getting dark, the people next door may be knocking soon.
Tomorrow I'll take it for a run then hopefully set the idling correctly, must say it sounds awesome with a bsa exhaust on. To loud if I'm honest, I may be on the look out for one, I would love to Change over the foot pegs, the one that are on are the road with the rubber I would like the off road ones.
What's your thoughts on the supertrap exhaust mark

Excellent news , if it runs ok i would mess too much . Supertraps are great but may need jetting really depending on the number of discs you use.
What about a genuine silencer , theres about 7 on ebay at the moment and better than having money in the bank if you want to sell the bike.
A decent restored XT500 should be worth about 5k so it all depends on what you have in your bike at the moment.
Its a more than decent bike to start with and the F model is harder to come by than any other so my view would be to take it back
to original, this is only my view and all depends on what you want from the bike.

I'm all ears mark, I love the xt's and I've always thought of having a 500, some one pointed out about the exhaust, as the bike is pretty original I don't want to tamper to much, pegs is a must but keep the rubber pegs, I would rather listen to someone that has that understanding about these bikes, I plan to use the 500 rather than having it sitting in the garage, I use all my other xt's, with two on going xt600 projects,
I need to get it mot insurance some tax, I'm hoping to take it to haggs bank next month if the weathers good, if not I'll take the tenere. I'll keep you posted on the running issue if any.

How good are your welding skills, i have made my own by just using the doodah bit of the foot pegs.

Grind off the end part so that all was left is the locating dodah.
Bought some lazer cut toothed steel pegs off ebay , these come flat but easily formed around some tube.
Used 2mm stainless for the flat section, drilled cut and filled, and once i have the profiles cut and welded
I will taper the underside of the pegs then weld in the braces.











I can punch out some more inner plates if this is the way you want to go, the outer serrated edge i just buy of ebay.

That's what I'm talking about, really nice peices, I made a pair for my 1150gs when I did a 36 hour enduro though the night in Italy last year made all the difference when you are on the pegs for long periods, I can do a little welding, I don't want to cut my pegs, I'll look on eBay see what comes available
