After a rebuild of my xt I've started the engine for the first time, the oil is not getting round the engine, after it ran for 30 seconds I stopped it to check oil, there no oil in the engine, not sure what's wrong at the moment, what should I be doing to trouble shot

I've taken the clutch side casing off to see if I can see anything amiss, all looks ok, the small ball bearing that stops the oil coming back was stuck pushed a little allan key in to release it, I've ordered a new gasket, do you think that might of been the problem.
I kicked the engine over a few times and the oil seems to come from that location now

That's the anti drain valve to stop the oil from filling the crankcase when shut off. If it was stuck I'd get the new set, only around $15us. That could sop flow if stopped tight.
When I start a new rebuild, I squirt 20w down the oil tube from the head and try to get enough that will fill the filter and then down into the pump, primes them pretty good.

God hope there know damage, waiting on the new parts arriving, while I've got the cover off I'll spray oil on the components,

When it ran did you open a tappet inspection hole & see if there was pumping up there? should puke some oil out when running.
With my bike upright & level i opened the inspection hole on the left cover (magneto side) and put around a litre of oil in the hole & then with the spark plug removed i fired the starter pumped the oil up from the pump to the bleed screw on the filter.
Once i had it pumping out the bleed screw i pinched that up & replaced the inspection screw on the left cover, then filled the tank with the measured amount.
Replaced spark plug & fired it up, checking to see if was making it up to the top of the engine (tappet inspection cover) yes oil puked all over the floor.
Use kickstarter to prime the system if you have no e-start.
