Morning all
Am having probs with the starter motor on my 1vj. It spins fine when pressing the starter button but it doesnt seem to engage the stater gear - I can just hear it whirring. Any ideas would be gratefully received as I need to get it back on the road for winter.
Cheers

Re: Starter Motor problem
Starter sprag clutch fucked Rik, Geoff knows a fix on this (summat to do with the springs) im sure he can give you some good advice shortly.
There is a good write up on this subject here from Dunc, his starter shit itself in south America.
What a place for your bike to crap out.

Mezo.

Cheers for the update. Guess I need to start practising with the kick start which I find hard work to be honest
might be the straw that breaks the camels back and means that I put the bike up for sale........

At least you've got a kickstart to fall back on..you wouldn't get that option on a more modern bike..if you learn the starting technique its realy too physical.

Re: Starter Motor problem
For my 600's I turn the choke on, don't turn on the ignition,NO throttle, kick it over 3-4 times(get it primed). then return kicker to just past TDC(right after the click from the decomp), turn ignition on, again NO throttle, give it an almighty kick, they usually start, sometimes takes 2 or 3 more full kicks, always starting the kick at TDC.

Re: Starter Motor problem
Yeah... sometimes you can fix it if it's the spring around the outside that's broken.... I'll see if I can find some photo's...

Re: Starter Motor problem
Just been through the thread in detail. So out with the spanners me thinks to take a look. Not sure what I am looking for but won't know till I take a look I guess. Was moving the bike earlier today and tried the starter whilst bike was on side stand. Sounded like it was trying to engage before spinning on its own.
