VanAndys 34L slug build

Does anyone know if 1JK-11181-02-00 will fit a 34L. looks the same, just worried about 1JK.

That is the correct number for all 600 engines from 1983 to 1988.

After 1988 they changed the distance of the the head bolts and a different gasket is used.

Your bore is a little rough, but hone and a set of rings should be all that is required. Polish the piston LIGHTLY with 600 emery paper.
The carbon deposit on the piston is NORMAL. No sign of overheat.

Thanks for your replies, Honing tool on order with Yamaha rings and head gasket. I've even purchased a cheap waterproof snake inspection camera to see if I can view any gear damage. Don't fancy splitting cases, scares the crap out of me.

Thanks Geoff, I remember reading / seeing that post now as well as reading about using a camera to check gearbox too.

I think I was concerned as I couldn't see any sprocket damage so thought I needed to find it. Perhaps the very first thing I should have done was contact previous owners and asked for bike history.

Still needed to strip it down thou, inspect, hone, rings, clean and paint. Just cost a bit, cheap if you consider conscience.

The bike; I've bought another power tool I bought a cheap (£50) polisher / sander / grinder to cut back the poor lacquer job on the tank, if you want to save a lot of money give it to a painter, but I'm glad I've gone this route, the polisher is doing the job but I petrified I'm gonna rip though the lacquer to the base coat or flip the tank onto the floor. photos later.

Tank decal fitting; I'm guessing look at a load of tank photos I've been collecting and have a go? or is there an easier / more helpful way? Please can someone give me a rough distance from the red blocks to the black bars? As I feel get this wrong it'll look pants. Oh and I'll try to get them on the right way and if I don't, well I don't think it matters does it.

I can see obvious damage, how bad do you think it is? is it time to call the guru? give me a hammer and I'm at home, splitting cases, heat, pullers, lots of jigsaw bits everywhere are all alien to me. I guess I can talk to local bike clubs and find out if there are any good mechanics around.

As far as parts are concerned do we know what is the 5th gear fix? is it simply a new same part, surely not?

Whilst polishing the crap out of me tank it looks like I polished off the lacquer and burnt the base paint, it looked really nice and I was just about to fit the decals too.
I've tried repaint and re-lacquer, will rub back in a few days but I recon its doomed, this time its going to the paint shop. A lesson learnt, don't bother with rattle cans, give it too someone who knows how to do it and save loads of time and money.

Thanks Marcm, very nice of you to offer and an offer I might take up, I'm so tempted to just rebuild it and deal with it another time, a year or two, but I'll always have that niggling voice saying its not right, and anxious harry here will probably end up selling it because I didn't deal with it. I'll give it some thought and I'll obviously won't expect it to be free, quite happy to pay for your time.
