Help about buying & general info

Hi, I am thinking (it is 90% happening) of buying a Tenere 34L so I have some questions about it. Firstly what should i check beside everything i check on all bikes, is there some weak point on these bikes i should pay extra attention? Is there needed to be done to the engine upon arrival of the bike (beside oil, oil filter). I am good with engines, bikes etc except gearboxes so are there any known troubles with that? The bike will be a commuter and some trips now and then travelling on about 55 - 75 mph, is that OK for the bike and most importantly what mileage should i get from a well maintained but not rebuilt engine?

No real issues if your mechanically minded, the 34L is the best of the Tenere` (ive got three of them)

The gears 4th & 5th can wear out (chipped teeth) depending how it has been ridden, pulling hard in fourth & fifth (using torque) wears them quicker, its fun riding but knackers the gears.

If it starts & runs with no gearbox noises when riding its good, all XT`s do have some rattle so dont be alarmed, if its a loud knocking then it could be something more serious, in general they are a good reliable bike.

All parts are still available for the bike.

Fuelly.com is a good site to see what mileage any car or bikes uses, its based on user/owner experience.

If you click on the link most guys are getting on an average around 20 kilometre per litre of fuel.

So a 34L Tenere should get you a distance of 560k`s (28ltr tank on a 34L)

Unfortunately the bike I was after got sold. Now I have found a 1991-1993 model (forgot the model code) that might fit my budget. I prefer the oldschool 34L though.

I am thinking of no restoration, only maintenance at least for start. I will wait for the right bike and preferably after summer when the prices drop a bit. I don't think I can buy from another country as the import fees will make any bike too expensive. I am patient though and also considering some other models like the Yamaha SR250, something cheap , easy to work, reliable and economic. Thanks for all the help and hopefully i some time I will post as an owner.
