If your going to Perth to see your brother were going to have to work on the lingo a little :rtfi:

Firstly the English "Put" things on the Barbie, here in Stralia we "Toss" them on.

And you must end it in "Maaate"

So it goes like this, "Toss another shrimp on the barbie Maaaate" & "Chuck us another Tinny while your up Maaate" :shades:

Well I thought I would have a look at the wiring. I do have two looms, but I wish to modify the wiring a little. The 550 comes with a neat feature, if you want to go and play in the dirt you can quickly disconnect the headlight and blinkers from the bike and the electrics unplug here Maaate.
Image
This is my other XT, on the one I am doing up now I wish to put a acerbis headlight, so I no longer need this feature. So I thought I would keep the goodish loom as a last resort just incase I make a major mistake.
Image
The loom has been botched by the previous owner ( no it fuckin wasn't me mezo) these connections will be cut off anyway.
Image
After a couple of hours debating where everything went I decided to put the loom on the bike and connect up the pieces I know and go from there, i don't want to cut too much off! :nono:
This is the connector that is going to go ( someone stop me if they know better)
Image
So I am going to pull back the sheathing, and with my Rabbi skills cut it off!
Image
And these where the exposed wires,
Image
Some of the wires had packing tape as insulation, I know I am a cheap barsteward but even I would use electricians tape!
Image
Once all the sheathing was removed I had to chase the wires that I would cut out.
Image
Its a good job I removed the sheathing as I found this little brown wire doing nothing, the lazy :foot_tap:

Well with the YZ nearing completion, and the snow is still on the ground I reconsidered what to do with my XT. I have two bikes on the road my Xt 550 and my XS 750, but I have to insure them separately so this is quite costly, and to put a third on the road ( I do not know how you do it Geoff) is ludicrous. The other half is already giving my jip over having too many bikes. So at the end of the summer I think I will mothball the XS ( I value riding the XT more). So my 1/2 rebuilt XT 550 will be getting a new life as a YZ550. I can ride this in the GP class of the Vintage Motocross club ( 1982 -1986). I have yz forks and a front disc so stopping the beast will be no problem , and I think 38hp is enough for an old guy to handle ( similar to the 81 YZ 250, but at an easier to control power band). So this will be no HL, but more like a YZ490. First thing will be to make my exhaust, so I got myself some 304 stainless bits.
Image
Made my headers as big as I could. This is 1-1/2" tubing that I will be using, 1-1/4" tubing is ridiculously expensive for elbows etc. I can use 1-14" pipe and turn the outside diameter to 1-1/2", this gives me a 0.050" wall thickness, a little heavy but easier to weld, and my exhaust is going to be as short as possible, something reminiscent of the old BSA/CCM style.
Image
They fit in my junk cylinder head perfect.
Image
It will be a lot better flowing than the original.
Image
Here are some pics of skimming the 1-1/4" pipe to 1-1/2'' tube dimensions.
Image
Image
Image
I will make my header clamps out of some 304 stainless flat bar, 1/4" x 2".

I also have to make my 2 int0 1 , so I will be using two 90 degree elbows ind altering them to suit.

I will post some more pics later.
