It's a bit of a pain Tom....
Just seen this post Geoff! What a useless forum member I am... apologies for the delay in my reply!

Sounds like a pain and I'm fully expecting something equally painful for mine. I'm in a bit of a pickle as I don't have any proof that it is an import. I have no Italian registration docs and I have an Italian mate who assures me they're very expensive to get. I might check that the DVLA don't have any record of it (ie. checking it's not stolen or something) and if they don't just go ahead and see if I can get it registered myself, ideally without an inspection. I'm told if you give them enough details and photos they often don't need them. I didn't think there was a fee for the inspection but there's definitely a £50 or so first registration fee if yours needs that.

Did you get that price from Yamaha about the certificate? I wrote them a letter as I was told they'd do it for free and got a phone call from them. The lady would happily tell me over the phone exactly what the date of manufacture was (September 1985) but wanted £100 to send me a letter with that written on it! I've been leaving this bit until I'm finished with the work on the bike and figured I'd get one for £50 from one of those clubs that's recognised by the DVLA. I had an old note from a guy (Roy Bacon?) who is no longer on the DVLA list but he dated the bike as 1983  I have just read that the DVLA apparently now insist on you approaching the manufacturer rather than any other body so my plan may be ruined...

Hi Tom.... Nice to see you back on...

I haven't gone any further regarding registration... I'm gonna wait till it's finished, then I'll bombard DVLA with phone calls & letters... I reckon mine will probably be easier than yours... I've got the previous owners name & address, engine number, frame number, colour, etc, etc.... The DVLA actually know the Reg No. they're just being typically difficult... :censored:

I spoke to a guy from Yamaha who I'm sure told me it was 25 quid to date the bike... can't remember now to be honest...

Maybe I spoke to the wrong person then! It was over 3 years ago so maybe they've changed, especially if the DVLA have changed their minds on who is able to provide a dating certificate. I might give them a call again in the week if I think I'm done with getting the bike ready.

And don't just paint them as the paint will crack under compression, i found that out the hard way. :bag:

Powder coating is the way.

The dvla don't want to do fuck all unless they can get money out of it....that includes selling your address details to pikeys that fancy a motocross bike or 3 on a regular basis.....
