Sven, just one thing. I see your joint compound on the engine case appears to be a tad on the heavy side and I am a little concerned that this will get into the engine once up and running, Like if it does it would block up your sump filter and oil ways, and, well I think you can see where that would lead to. Hopefully Your aware of this and the sealent is only bleeding (you dont need to much there) on the exsternal of the casings.

Keep up the top work

Hey Sven, don't use the headgasket in that kit, get a genuine Yamaha! I used that brand and have just found that mine is leaking and causing problems.

Yes, the seat cover is from David Lambeth.. the quality seems to be good but we will see on the fit - should know by end of next week.

Yep, I think a was a bit keen on the sealant. The cases always wept a bit in the past, so I think I might have used a bit much... oops!

Interesting tip on the head gasket, will certainly consider it - thanks for it. :thanks: Actually: Just realised one thing anyway: As the rings were wrongly measured, the dealer also gave me a standard gasket kit! So the head gasket would be too small anyway, wouldn't it? So I may be forced to buy a new head gasket anyway... well, that will be an interesting discussion with the dealer on Monday as I have opended the kit already to get to some of the smaller o-rings and seals... fun and games! Let's see if he will "contribute" to the cost!

The head gasket is the same for all bore sizes.
"Don't worry," he said, "things could be worse ........."
So I stopped worrying and lo and behold, things did get worse!

+ 1

Its very easy to make this mistake (i did) and had to remove my rocker cover & do it all again, i used whey to much sealant.
Ive heard plenty of stories of how "little worms" fall away insides & block the oilways, and then its,,,,,

Well, just good to see I am not the only one who got the s&^%ts with it today!

Just read Eric's latest dramas... coincidently I had the same issue today: A stripped thread - one of the head bolts pulled out of the barrel... so I have to wait another week until I can hopefully complete the engine and put it into the frame... it is all waiting for it, ready to go.

Here the offending thread... bastard!

Image

Until then all went well... the new oversized rings fit, the gaps are right, the piston slipped in well and the gaskets seem to fit, so full steam ahead, until the bolts pulled out, grrrrrrr...

A shot just before the bolt pulled out...

Image

So the bike has to wait a bit longer... so did the last few bits that remained, put the wheels in and reinstalled the forks. At least the new fork seals seem to be right this time. Installed them (they are a lot tighter than the 43F ones, which makes more sense) and put them under pressure for a few hours... no leaks - all looking good.

Image

Well, so I did a bit more on the tank... puttying and sanding, still a few more rounds to go until it is ready to paint, but getting there... it is actually good fun.

Wouldn't be an old bike resto if you wouldn't have a few challenges along the way...

Looking good there Sven

I'm looking at doing a strip down in the next few months and remember helping a chum taking his engine out for repainting , that took a hour or two as his done it before. After the paintjob and now refitting this lot together, eish the engine and swingarm frame get together was a serious pain in the but.

We had the bike upright, then on right, then on the left, faack It did go in eventually but with lots of swearing and a couple of shots with a hammer.
Is there a easier better way

Right, the thread has been fixed. So back on the engine, finish the assembly. All went OK, but I think there are still a couple of semi-dodgy threads (one of the oil filter bolts for example). But I thought I put the engine in, start it up and then see where it all leaks and drips... cannot imagine that the carburator won't flood or leak or some of the covers don't seep oil... then take it all out again and fix it...

So, engine completed - here it is:

Image

Image

In the mean time also picked up the seat from the upholsterer. Sometimes it pays to leave it to the professionals: The seat now looks absolutely fantastic! But he had to take the whole thing apart, reshape and resew it. The shape from the UK was just too far off. It however does the usual trick and stands back a bit from the tank at the tip of the seat. Not sure what can be done about it yet - the cover does not seem too tight, maybe heat is up a bit and bend it for a while? Ideas anyone?

Image

So, engine in - here it goes! Went well until I tried to put in two bolts, one on the front frame bracket and the one on the bottom and could not get the M10 bolts in... WTF? After thinking hard I worked out that when I put the case together I put in two of those joining plugs... and some must be 8mm diameter inside and some 10mm? Or I should not have put any in at all... So, I was somewhat screwed. Last thing I want is pull it ALL apart again. Well, the drill comes in handy and I just drilled it out! Worked well on one and then the other starts spinning, the little f&*^er... after breaking two drill bits I gave up and put in an mate bolt... not perfect, but as it is the one right on the bottom of the engine I think I can get away with it - it doesn't add a lot to the solidity of the engine mounts.

So, for anyone who is about to put the cases together: Watch out for those little suckers, not sure how I mixed them up / used the wrong ones, but it happended.

The final result after much swearing and cursing:

Image

Carburettor in, and all connected. Let's see if the start up works this weekend, despite the tank not being ready yet. :funkynanna: Still more filling and sanding to do... it has more dents than I first thought... not deep, but messy ones that take lots of shaping and mucking about. Sometimes wonder whether stripping it down completely was the right path to take, but too late now! Will get there, just takes time...

Image

Image

Really getting excited now... it is great to see the old girl come to life again. It will look fantastic when the nice bits go on (tank, covers, mask and seat). :yay:
